We could possibly be in late 1983-1984.

Forget the charts. The economic and political environment of today is totally different from 1983. The US had double digit interest rates back then, the cold war and nuclear arms race was still in full force, China wasn't a major economic player and - apart from the arms race and the risk of...

Dow, S&P close up more than 1%, post biggest reversal in 4 years

You can trust the calendar regarding scheduled econ number and earnings releases. So if the calendar says there are no more important news releases for the day which might have a heavy impact on the market, this is usually the case. However, there is always a risk of unscheduled news hitting...

Dow, S&P close up more than 1%, post biggest reversal in 4 years

Don't forget that there a people who have systematic approach or a framework within they operate. So, it's possible that there simply was no signal or whatever which allowed them to go long. Maybe they even look at the markets in a completely different way than you do. Yes, this may seem stupid...

Dow, S&P close up more than 1%, post biggest reversal in 4 years

Right. Had the market dropped further, it would be quite easy to present a bunch of reasons why this was supposed to happen. But I agree with i960 that getting short at around 10:30 am would not have been a smart move. At this time it was pretty clear that the market wanted to move higher for...

Dow, S&P close up more than 1%, post biggest reversal in 4 years

I went short the YM after the open, betting on a further meltdown. When the market accelerated a bit to the downside but couldn't break the support, I moved my stop very close. Got out with a minimal loss. However, I completely missed the move to the upside.

Should you ignore or explore the Dow Theory sell signal?

I think it still has some merit, however it is overly complex in relation to its performance. Simple, very long term(!) moving average crossovers (say, 50-100 days for the fast and 200-400 days for the slow line) will generate similar entry/exit signals and yield pretty similar results - i.e. a...

what does this mean for short selling?

No, naked short selling is then you sell shares without borrowing them first. This is - at least in some countries - possible because there is a time difference between the short sale and the actual settlement, i.e. the "delivery" of the shares to the buyer. When shorting naked, you use this...

what does this mean for short selling?

No, you borrow the shares from your broker. This is done automatically when you sell short. However, there is no guarantee that you can borrow (and thus sell short) every stock at every time, because the prerequisite for this is that the broker has the stock to borrow in its inventory. But with...

IB market data stall --- TWS or Java or Windows 8?

Just updated Java to 1.7_67. As expected, problem persists. YM quotes freeze a few seconds after starting up TWS. On desktop and with current TWS 946 only.

IB market data stall --- TWS or Java or Windows 8?

Have the same problem today. Quotes on YM Dec 14 are freeze a few seconds after starting TWS. However, this only happens with TWS 946.2 (the current version), old version 936.9 works fine. And it only happens on my desktop computer, notebook also works fine (even with 946.2). Java on both(!)...

The UNIX and OS X Version are the same. If you download the manual installation file, you will see that the file offered on the Mac download page is exactly the same as the one on the UNIX download page.

    Unofficial TWS bug thread

Two new bugs in 936.9n (OS X / Unix Version): After updating Java to 1.7.0_45 (or the newer 1.7.0_51, for that matter) on OS X, the 'periods' setting of an indicator sometimes (often) gets stuck - the input field is no longer clickable, thus it is impossible to enter a new value. Only...
