    Smoking weed and trading

As a former ex-heavy user -- hey, it was the 60's/70's --, my recommendation is to do everything straight, sans pot or alcohol. I like a clear head now. But as someone who used to start the morning with a joint, I can see where at one time (if they had trading on the net back then), trading...

Market depth of the ES e-mini futures contract

Some good ideas gmst, thanks. No political comment intended but Obama getting killed in a terrorist attack is relatively trivial compared to some of the stuff that could happen now. Thankfully unlikely though. Yes, I was watching the market when the White House being invaded rumor came...

Market depth of the ES e-mini futures contract

Thanks JohnHar - my main concern is with the amount of standing bid orders from the range of 20-50 points down from the current market price in a situation where some event closes the markets down within a very short period of time - minutes. So, are there enough bids 50 points below to fill my...

Investment Banks Eye 'Hedge Funds for the Masses’

Have to agree. Or, it could be yet another way for those at the top to vacuum money up from the bottom. You'd think that 'retail traders' would know about the performance of the 'hedge' fund industry by now.

Advantages and Disadvantages of TF Rusell 2000

TF advantages: - nice for swing trades on the long side after bigger selling subsides. Minimal commission if really holding for 'a while.' - nice to be short during elevator plunges down - need to buy fewer contracts (less commissions) because of movement and the fact that 1 contract = a...

Market depth of the ES e-mini futures contract

Good point. Have done only the basics with options but that is pretty basic - will look into it.

Market depth of the ES e-mini futures contract

Thanks - my main concern, and something that I probably shouldn't be worried about, is the worst case scenario -- fill in your own disaster here -- where the markets close within minutes and when they finally reopen, there are a series of limit down days because even then, there are few buyers...

Market depth of the ES e-mini futures contract

That's interesting - thanks. Maybe I'll research the flash crash to see if I can get any detail on whatever buying happened on the various levels on the way down the elevator shaft plunge to the bottom. I know that if something very bad happened, it would take a few minutes for everyone to...

If you had to do it all over again....

At age 18: Start dollar cost averaging into indexes. Quit smoking cigarettes and dope (came later) Work hard at getting good at guitar. Learn how to repair and build them.

Market depth of the ES e-mini futures contract

Thinking I won't get a response to this but that says something. Bumping it once to put it back on the front page.

Don Miller has just written a book

Will be interested to see the reviews on the book. Used to follow him a bit but he never really revealed his methodology via his 'free' stuff. Glad it is not over-priced. From the table of contents, maybe there is some practical trading content beyond the bio and PMA stuff. But really...

I am getting my butt handed to me on a daily basis!

Lower position sizes, only buy at apparent support areas, scale-in slowly, scale out slowly, only use indexes, take a multi-day timeframe approach if necessary, trade UPRO and TNA, not futures and only use the 3X leverage ability of those to put less cash-at-risk, not to buy too much, never let...

Market depth of the ES e-mini futures contract

Hello - Have asked this question of the CME but they just refer me to their datamine product which is overkill and I don't want to pay for that. For purposes of risk control, I am trying to find out how far down in price standing bids typically go on the ES futures contract. In other...

IB Account Management unavailable for 24 hours +

Hello - Can't get IB to respond though I haven't called them yet. Interactive Broker's "Account Management" facility has been unavailable for 24 hours +. Anyone with any ideas on this? Thanks

    IB Fined by CFTC

Yes but it is a matter of degree - I have more 'faith' in the gubment (FDIC) than the SIPC who does not cover funds that are/were being used for futures trading (specifically). IB is just a bit too murky beneath the sheets for my taste but I still use them.

    IB Fined by CFTC

IB has always seemed like a mysterious entity to my eyes and though I do have some money over there now (I love my $1 commission for 200 shares in my IRA), I no longer am comfortable having most of my money there. I always have IBKR in all of my watch lists, for whatever that is worth...

    Why Trade Futures?

One thing about the insurance coverage on the futures accounts - TDAmer/TOS offers FDIC insured bank accounts for the cash sweeps from futures trades so that is pretty significant. Of course any existing futures positions are not insured but the cash sweeps from futures positions being closed...

    IB margin increase

I recently pulled money from IB as their business is too murky behind the scenes for me to understand and I didn't like the fact that there is no FDIC insured account available for cash sweeps. There is a lot I like about IB though. But I think that this kind of risk control protects all...
