I don't completely understand why you would own a lot more taxes. Wash sales for daytraders shouldn't be a huge deal since your disallowed loss will just be added to the cost basis and therefore your loss will only be delayed.

I agree, it's not that much for a skilled worker at that age. In addition, that article mentions the anomalies, they should mention the median income for those employees also.
