Trying to make it on my own

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you started out by designing a system for two months at your last job and then went on to trade it for 2 years, making a 400% return? That's pretty good. Good luck with the job hunt.

Tell me about the 95% that fail

That's my biggest fear...is that I'm spending my time doing the wrong thing.

Tell me about the 95% that fail

This is what I've always been hearing - one needs to study deep and hard, one needs to put in thousands of hours of screen time. Does that mean watching the markets live/going through historical data bar by bar and making notes? My "cookie-cutter" way of learning felt way too passive...

Tell me about the 95% that fail

Thanks for your input. 1. I've never really sat down to identify my strengths. I would lie if I said I was a hard worker (I do work hard but I know I can always work harder). My strength right now is that I have a good amount of free time at my day job to devote to trading and learning...

Tell me about the 95% that fail

My problem isn't capitalization - I'm not rich by any means but I have a day job to support myself currently. I guess my question is: As a beginner, what is the most important thing that I should be doing? Am I suppose to study charts? Backtest different strategies? Try to figure out...

Tell me about the 95% that fail

Were they trying to get rich quick and just jumped in too early? Did they just blow out their accounts and decided not to keep going? Did they put in thousands of hours of screen time and yet still fail? Did they backtest their strategies and still failed? If you're now consistently...

Best place to purchase historical stock data for backtesting??

Thanks for your input. To combat the problem of emulating randomized data I was going to go live with a paper account to see if live results reflect backtested results. But I'll try to get tick files too...its just that it might get too expensive with a basket of stocks I want to focus on.

Best place to purchase historical stock data for backtesting??

I think what he meant was to take random data and compare it to actual market data to see if a system is still performing with an edge (I'm not exactly sure but another notable ET member wrote about this - Acrary). But for a beginner I've been told that Yahoo historical daily data is enough...

    Taking the Plunge

$12.50 isn't alot of money by itself but every little bit counts and it starts to add up my point was that the ES is highly leveraged and if he's starting out it might be better to start out smaller by trading the S&P500 index

    Taking the Plunge

damn thats cool u might want to try to trade the S&P500 if you find the ES to be too highly leveraged...immediately after you buy or sell 1 contract of the ES your automatically down $12.50 due to the spread.

Best place to purchase historical stock data for backtesting??

I want to focus on Nasdaq stocks with a volume over 300,000 and price over $10. A quick scan results in 500+ stocks. And its still $8400 for 500 equities :(
