Yes, that is what I plan to do now. Keep my day job and trade the daily and weekly charts.

I agree, although in my line of work I don't have to be right 100% of the time and can still be successful. There is a degree of variance involved in practicing engineering. But I don't plan on bringing that mindset over into trading.

I agree with the point you're trying to make. But let me give you a little more background information about myself before you and the others judge: 1. Tried to get into banking and finance. Applied to Goldman, JP Morgan, etc - never heard back. 2. Tried to get into a top 10 MBA school...

I'm located in New York City and I was planning on sending my resume to First Securities and Chimera Capital. I think those are the only two that actually pay salary and hire traders.

I'm not going to settle for complacency... especially in my current career path. I see the older guys in my office and I do not want to end up like them when I'm their age (I'm 26 right now). Trading would provide me with an exit strategy and the ability to work on my own, for myself. It...

I think that's wishful thinking from what I heard (I'm probably wrong and you have more experience than me). I'd be happy with small consistent returns after five years. If I can make enough consistently to survive and work for myself trading and quit my day job, I'll be quite happy.

Thank you for your response. I really respect your education background and work experience. 1. I'm 26 years old in Mechanical Engineering. I know successful traders come from all types of backgrounds and an engineering background may not help them. But I think the one thing Engineering...

What are you doing now? Are you working your day job and swing trading (ie doing your research and analysis at night and on the weekends)?

I think I will do something similar for the time being. Keep my day job and learn to swing trade. I'm not comfortable with futures and options yet, I think I will stick to stocks and ETFs. Out of curiosity, how many clients do you have?

Engineer looking to make a career change into trading

Yes I will stick to swing trading for now. Well actually the next step is to develop a trading plan, select a basket of ETFs and equities with high volatility and simulate paper trades for the next few months. I will tweak my plan and strategy accordingly until I feel comfortable going live...

Engineer looking to make a career change into trading

LOL no I fully understand. It was just that my friend who was a professional trader told me that it was not unreasonable to make $500 a day using $500,000 capital. Initially my objective my first year was just to break even. I read somewhere that if you lose only 10% of your capital your...

it is to be used for my own trading account and leverage there was a $3000 course but they waive the fee if you become a member of T3 (I think that just means signing up and saying you're going to trade with them) after talking to the members here I think I'm better off swing trading...

Engineer looking to make a career change into trading

I want to thank you guys for all your feedback. Although it was more pessimistic than I had first imagined, I realize it is the reality of trading. I guess my initial reasons for wanting to go into trading was my lack of fulfillment in my current career and trading seemed to pique my interest...

Engineer looking to make a career change into trading

i'm more comfortable with trend following using EMA's right now... but i will take swing trading into account later on i think my time frame will be days and weeks not hours and minutes like most of the day traders here

Engineer looking to make a career change into trading

If I were to achieve an average rate of return as a successful trader, I would be quite content with that - considering more than 90% of traders fail. Also, I'm not craving the boring middle class lifestyle I'm living it right now!! If you know of any good funds/high performance funds...

Engineer looking to make a career change into trading

I'd pick Scenario 2 - there is an 80% chance of failure with Scenario 2 vs 90% chance of failure with Scenario 1, regardless of the amount of money you give me to trade.

thanks for the advice Bolimomo do most traders pick a few stocks and etf's and stick with those? one trader told me he scans all of the stocks in each letter of the alphabet ... he'll go through the A's one day, the B's the next, etc... to look for setups, breakouts, etc.

I live on the East Coast but that is really good advice. Do you have any advice on how to pick a market, stock, or etf to trade? Also what strategy should I use? I feel like I read all these books and understand whats out there but there are a million+ strategies, indicators, etc to...
