China halts 'rare earth' mineral shipments to Japan: NYT

I know it can be difficult with Americas short attention span culture, but let's try to think long term,( 50 yrs down the road) like the Chinese do. China does not want to do anything to upset it's exports to US and Europe. The Chinese consumers can't absorb all of China's production, yet, so...

China halts 'rare earth' mineral shipments to Japan: NYT

It will definitely take time to ramp up our manufacturing if we can't be supplied from China. But, if we ramp up our manufacturing to not need China as much, I guarantee we won't make the mistake of shipping all those kobs to them again.

China halts 'rare earth' mineral shipments to Japan: NYT

Question: if US keeps pushing China on currency float, will they cut our rare earths to respond? MCP 8% and climbing.

China to USA: you ate too many hamburgers.

Who loaned US the money to buy the hamburgers and may not see anything in return for that loan?

Actually, what´s the target of FED´s policy now ?

Did you see the spike in metal prices right after the announcement? A lot of traders seem able to filter out the filler for the facts pretty quickly.

Why is gold making record highs?

Good point. Interest rates can't rise because no one in the US could pay the additional interest. A question I have is how much gold is owned by private US citizens? The 5% or so of the world's total supply the gov't owns seems low for a reserve currency.

Why is gold making record highs?

Do you have the amount of that 165K that is still in circulation? I'm sure some of it was lost at sea, wasted in manufacturing, hidden and never found, etc...

Soros: USA is "blah", China is "phenomenal" and now runs the world

The only reason America led the world in manufacturing was due to virtually all the factories in europe and Asia having been bombed to bits or converted to making weapons that were no longer needed during WW2. It didn't take long for Japan and Germany to regain manuf. market share after they...

    Computers set for quantum leap

The reason that effort failed, and the reason another effort at photon computers failed about 20 years ago was that nanotech was not developed enough to easily and cheaply produce devices. Molecular beam epitaxy and metal oxide CVD were used back then. These two processes were insanely...

Soros: USA is "blah", China is "phenomenal" and now runs the world

That's my point. Many of the social programs have inflation/cost of living adjustments. So the Fed and gov't would be forced to print ever increasing amounts of $ to keep up with rising prices. And to the poster who said we would just stop buying, don't think so. A high % of the items...

Soros: USA is "blah", China is "phenomenal" and now runs the world

If china let their currency float tomorrow, every good we import would possibly go up in price 30 to 60% within weeks and/or months. You talk about a kickstart for hyperinflation...

Much Better Idea Than Pork Barrel Spendulus

Gold is going to break record highs today

I've harped on gold and metal stocks for a long time. Although they have gone up a lot, (check MCP since i posted about rare earths) there is no guarantee they will continue one way or another. Although the Fed and gov't have a strict anti-deflation policy, which keeps metal prices heading up...

China technology - a military threat to the the US

In addition to metals, I also study the field of nanotech. Nano applies the quantum principles used for the communication in this article to materials. Right now, quantum dots are the big thing in nano. The problem is they typically cost over $1000 per gram. However, a bunch of companies are...

    Major news story

I checked and the Mountain Pass mine in Ca. has almost 20Million tons of this ore, which is enough to last us. I'm not sure if the ore was for all 17 elements. Also not sure how fast they can come online because of the environmental issues. Apparently, Mountain Pass had a pretty bad spill...

    Major news story

Reread the article. It says 20Ktons for the 2nd half of the year, Which is ~40kTons for the whole year. However, the article seems to imply that China could make more cuts.

    Major news story

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rare-earths.gif According to that chart USA's max production was about ~27,000 tons per year. China seems to be cutting ~50,000 tons. So US can make up around half of that. This still eaves a huge shortfall for the US and our allies who still do some...
