Perpetual, I spent 100K to go to school and cannot earn income.

This thread reminds me of a brunch that we went to earlier this spring. The brunch was with my g/f's friends, so I barely knew some of them. One of her friends was complaining that he had not been able to find work in over a year. I asked what field was he looking to get into. He stated...

    Only in California

The high paid mayor still has the last laugh. Even though he resigned, after 17 years on the job, he is entitled to a $650,000 a year pension courtesy of the State of California. (The city of Bell makes pension contributions on behalf of the employee to the state run pension system.) The...

Army is still hiring(now up to age 42!)

I'm not so sure. Looking at the Army standards, it seems more rigorous than that. I'm not sure where the cut-off is.... http://www.army-fitness.com/Male-Fitness-Standards.php

PUT options liquidated at worst possible prices

I have never had an account at IB. With that said, if the IB auto-liquidation engine is indeed fully automated with no human intervention, it stands to reason that even .01 bids on a $40 stock will be assumed to be accurate and the engine will act on those bids. Clearly the IB...

Health Bill Would Add 3.8% Tax on Investment Income

I think you are spot on. This is a dynamic change in tax policy. Up until this point, only EARNED income (hourly wages and salary) have been subject to the medicare family of taxes. UNEARNED income has always been exempt until this proposal. In the new world order, this is only the start...

Health Bill Would Add 3.8% Tax on Investment Income

What you say makes sense. Have a friend who has a wife that is a corporate attorney. She makes $200k. He trades full time and makes $225K as an example. The threshold for a couple is $250k, so only $175k is subject to this proposed tax. ($200k + $225K = $425K - $250k threshold.

Health Bill Would Add 3.8% Tax on Investment Income

The way I read it is that all capital gains (long and short) along with interest income, dividends, annuities, royalties and rents will be taxed the 3.8% tax if it is over the 200k/250k threshold. Interest income, dividends, annuities, royalties and rental income are all taxed at ordinary...

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-03-18/health-bill-said-to-add-3-8-medicare-tax-on-unearned-income.html I can't believe it! By Ryan J. Donmoyer and James Rowley March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic congressional leaders would raise to 3.8 percent the Obama administration’s...

    The $555,000 Student-Loan Burden

"Her damaged credit has prevented her from buying a home or a new car. She says she and her boyfriend of three years have put off marriage and having children because of the debt." WTF! She wants to buy a home and a NEW car??? Why don't we send her to a new home? It's called debtors...

"Volume and Open Interest" by Kenneth Shaleen?

I attended his seminar way back in 1994 here in Los Angeles, CA. I'll sell you my autographed copy of "Volume and Open Interest" for only $1,000.00 :D On a more serious note, Ken's strategies and concepts were very straightforward. None of this red light/green light crap you see being...

TD Ameritrade denied margin application, any suggestions?

If "student" is selected, it sounds like the applicant is automatically denied... I don't think a phone call will change the decision. Best thing to do is apply at another firm and "enhance" your income, net worth, years of experience, etc. Just like you would on a resume for a job...:D

Calls to suspend the 10% penalty tax on withdrawals from retirement accounts

It sounds like a good idea. Instead, why not lower the penalty to 5 or 6% ? People would still think twice about the early withdrawal and hopefully spend the money wisely...
