83 percent of all U.S. stocks are in the hands of 1 percent of the people.

Warren Buffett makes the same point: http://www.valueinvesting.de/en/inflation-equity-investor-by-warren-buffett.htm Investment income is a small portion of national income, and if per capita real income could grow at a healthy rate alongside zero real investment returns, social justice...

I see that I confuse profits with total wealth. The point still stands.

83 percent of all U.S. stocks are in the hands of 1 percent of the people.

Let's say the gubmint went to the Gates, Ellisons, and Waltons and said "we will appropriate your wealth unless you sign this document which promises to reinvest 99.9% of profits back in the business. Your consumption can be no more than .01% per year of your total wealth." .01*$1 billion is...

what are the chances yen trades thru 87

The last time the yen was this strong was back in 95 . . . lived in Korea at the time and the currency was on the news all the time. This is a stealth yen rally with heavy disbelief from the pikers at FXCM. Always worthwhile to bet against them, or so I'm thinking.

what are the chances yen trades thru 87

I'm just looking at the chart . . . a break through 87 on USDJPY would be serious. Don't know about global equities.

what are the chances yen trades thru 87

According to Dailyfx, high pessimism on the yen among retail traders . . Currency also trading through important levels . . . what are the chances it breaks to new levels soon? Or is the BOJ in the market buying dollars and will prevent too strong a currency?

"More Money than God" by Mallaby

True. The interesting question is how they outperformed the market. Of course over time some may have lost more than they ever made . . . if you make a 500% return with 100 million and lose 50% with $5 billion, on the whole your investors are losers.

47% of early boomers could run shy of cash

http://www.govexec.com/story_page.cfm?articleid=45514&sid=2 That's a great article about the gov't 401k plan . . . I'd love to know how the guy with the $3 million account was able to accumulate that stash with only 5 investment options.

"More Money than God" by Mallaby

I'm not sure I catch the distinction. Mallaby goes through an interesting history of the Amaranth blow up . . . basically Amaranth became the market and the collateral calls became too much. Griffin was able to avoid the same fate because he had long term funding and he controlled his own back...

"More Money than God" by Mallaby

It's not interviews, not all of it is ancient history. Very interesting discussion for instance of Ken Griffin and how he got saved by selling five year bonds, so that he wasn't cleaned out by the crisis. And how PT Jones got stuck in some Indonesian banks and couldn't get out, even though he...

"More Money than God" by Mallaby

This is a book by a Washington Post editorialist about hedge funds. I expected it would be a snoozer and about as exciting as a C-span roundtable, but it was pretty good. He got interviews with all the big names, like Soros, Kovner, Steinhardt, etc. And he asks the interesting question, how did...
