Don't attempt to build positions intraday at Tradestation

Sorry, but TradeStation's right, it's you who's completely confused. If you make three separate buys and sell them all at once then you've executed three trades because each purchase is recorded as a separate lot. Second, it's not the number of trades in a single day that matters. The...

Don't attempt to build positions intraday at Tradestation

If that's their policy then how is that I've done 75 daytrades on one stock the past 4 days?

taxes: is this true or not?

And, you go and give some poor advice yourself. It's CAPITAL GAINS that losses can be applied to. Doesn't matter how the gains were made, stock, options, futures, etc.

taxes: is this true or not?

Not sure if this applies elsewhere, but at least in New Jersey you cannot carry losses in excess of $3K forward for state income tax on capital gains. BTW, the losses only apply against capital gains, not income.

If the distribution does adjust the cost basis as a stock dividend would, and someone is up against the $3k loss limit, then having your broker reinvest the distribution is probably the best bet, agreed?

Yes, I have, BDB is great for this sort of stuff. I'm not sure why you think it's "outside" the discussion though. Remember your comment about how a long bar is bad? Well, that's a prime example of why frequency analysis is a good idea, because all long bars are not created equally...

2x gearing aside, how does day-trading these things affect someone who's flat come the end of the day? IMHO, some of these ultra-shorts have incredible intraday trends, which is easy money if you can handle the swings. So what that's it's a short-term gain? I'd expect the IRS to treat all...

My understanding is that a taxable distribution does not change the cost basis of your investment. If that's correct, you "made" the $5K distribution.

You asked for examples of queries that weren't based on symbol and date. A key reversal, a large block trade or doing frequency analysis of price and/or volume all fall under that type of query. Well, the exact protocol would be provider dependent, but yes, in general terms it would be one...

Hmm, price and volume pattern queries, like reversals and large block trades aren't terribly esoteric. From the sound of it you've come up with a highly optimized format that lends itself quite well to stream oriented reads. How do you handle data corrections, late trades and similar...
