Pro firm leverage and risk management

Thanks Robert. I have had huby's exact same question and even argued it with Don Bright himself on another forum but never got a straight answer, just the usual "because we are professionals" mumbo jumbo. Being someone who only takes one position at a time it never occured to me that you could...

    Barrons 7/2/01: Direct Access Showdown

Ms. Carey, I appreciate your willingness to participate on these boards and address your critics. Others in the past have simply deleted their posts, taken their toys and run home to mommy (or their lawyer). I respect your point of view and your goal of giving your readers accurate...

    series 7 traders

uptik, There are several detailed threads discussing proprietary trading firms, all with very good information. Here are links to a few of them. Bright http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=1429 Echotrade http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=819...

    April 1st?

Stock777, I agree that there would be bad fills, it happens all the time on market orders orders. My point is, what difference does it make if the stop is manually or automatically executed? Either way, it is still a market order and subject to the execution risks that go along with it...

    April 1st?

Wow, I really have respect for IB and their forward thinking in making direct access stock and futures trading available at a low cost, but I must admit I don't understand or agree with IB managment on this issue. As mentioned in previous posts, I think IB is assuming too much...i.e...

    losing

Qwik, This is a great concept for dealing with the mental side of stops. Thanks for sharing it. I use a similar method by assuming that a trade is a loser as soon as I enter. I then focus on managing the loss. When I win, great, but when I lose, I've already prepared for it mentally. I...

    Bullets & Conversions

zboy, Did you ever try a bullet with IB? I'd be interested to know how it went and if its worth having the extra capital tied up. Kirk

Sept.28 rule does not give 4:1 margin

I would be curious to know if anyone has asked their brokers about this, or if the brokers even have a clue yet? I know def mentioned that IB is still working on implementation of the rules, maybe he will update us as their policies are put in place. Has anyone heard from Cyber, MB, et al...

    Real-Time NASDAQ E-Mini Feed & Charting

I use Qcharts (its 24hrs and shows the globex sessions) for standard charting/TA and Metastock for backtesting and custom formulas. Despite the poor ratings Qcharts gets on this forum and others, I've only had one really bad day (and a few slow days) using it for futures quotes. I only pull...

Sept.28 rule does not give 4:1 margin

NKNY, I agree, but they have always done this in cash accounts and many online brokers did it for margin accounts. Its due to the T+3 rule for clearing trades. You capital is locked up until the trade clears, which has always been 3 business days. I'm not sure how the regulations work that...

Sept.28 rule does not give 4:1 margin

stockerup, This is a little off topic, but to respond...I'm from Alabama. I have access to cable and DSL, have a proprietary firm available (only 1, but available nonetheless), and, contrary to popular belief, we recently started wearing shoes and installed indoor plumbing. Just wanted...

New Daytrading rule in September 01'

To answer Babak's question, I think the 4:1 margin was a bone they threw in to keep objections down. Most professional traders (I'm referring to those who derive their entire income from trading, including the "at home yahoos" as Don Bright refers to them, not just those with a 7) probably have...

New Daytrading rule in September 01'

I just want to know which moron decided that buying and selling in the same day was riskier than holding a position overnight? I mean, I realize that we aren't as smart as "them" and they know what's best for us and all, but that seems counterintuitive...oops, is it ok for me to use big words...

New Daytrading rule in September 01'

This is a point that has confused me. Does this mean that the margin is calculated on all of your positions added together, even if you only held one at a time? For example, if I trade JNPR 30 times in one day, will I need margin to cover as if I bought all of the positions at the same time...

    question about IB

Check out http://www.quotetracker.com . They offer several free realtime data sources, but I think for streaming quotes you will now have to pay $10/month. Still not bad, even while learning. It is a great piece of software and I use it as a backup data source. Good luck, Kirk

    Risk management and odds

Hi all, I normally don't jump into the middle of arguments like this (if you can really call it that...compared to the Ken Calhoun thing its like a ladies tea party), but I believe this subject is probably the most important for new or previously unsuccessful traders to confront...

    IB TWS new ideas

There are no commissions. Its a forex broker that quotes you a bid/ask quote. To buy you pay the ask, to sell you get the bid. That's where they make money, the spread. To stay on topic, I do think they have a nice Java app. Kirk

Best daytrading broker with lowest margins !!!

We have similar trading styles and I make about 2-5 round trip trades per day. Only 1 contract at a time, so in a month it may range from 40 trades to as high as 100 or so. Not much as far as trading volume goes, so they must not have stiff requirements for volume. I think he had to negotiate...
