But from what I read on IBs website, one needs to install a WAPMAN Pro microbrowser (9.95 on palmgear.com) that has WTLS feature in order to run their app and also specify the IB's gateway in preferences. Do you mean it does not work even after you do that?

I believe you are mistaken . QQQ has a lot more volume than SPY. So number of stocks in an index has nothing to do with volume.

If you dont like ES e-mini spread, you could always trade NQ e-mini. It has .10 spread, of course it has less volume because of that too. Build up a product, and then we will come in and mess with it. Also if you like an even thinner spread (0.000001) you could trade SPY,QQQ, DIA. There are so...

What you dont realize, is that with thinner spread you will not be able to make 10 profitable trades a day, but a lot less as it will take more ticks to break even (at least). So yes you will save money by trading less. It is like saying you want to take local train to work instead of express...
