How to best execute a large order for a thinly traded stock

I'd like to know the best way to execute a large order for a thinly traded stock. Since I'm at work during the day, I'd like for the entry and exit to be at either market open or close. Let's say open for this example because that's what's easier for me (I can do it in the evening or...

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

I was thinking I could get buy with 1 or 2%. This is going to be a challenge. For now I'm trading 100 shares, which obviously aren't earning me anything. 5% of 100 shares = lunch! So I'm thinking of doubling this slowly and observing the effect if any. I'm also considering limit...

Max amount of daily volume one can trade without disrupting

Thanks for sharing your experience. Playing 20-25% of the stock's volume is quite a lot. I wouldn't have thought it to be possible. You must have been really influencing the price. I'm afraid if I do a large buy order, I'll run the price up and then when I go to sell I'll run the price...

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

Do you have an idea of what big size relative to volume means? I ask because I want to trade some $3 stocks. I'm wondering what % of the daily volume I can trade. 2? 5? I like to use market on open orders because I'm often at work during trading hours, so in that case maybe I could...

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

My fill on the nasdaq stock was 1 penny away. On the NYSE & Amex, it was more than 10 cents away.

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

I put the order in about 20 minutes before the open. Is there a time limit that you have to put it in earlier? I will call IB and ask them about it. Since one went in my favor it's a bit odd. They're not executing at the open open.

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

Funny about the uptick rule, no one told me. I rarely sell stocks short. I really don't understand the explanation. In the trade log it says 9:30:16.. so in 16 seconds the price went down over 1%.. or was there a big spread? I thought that they queue up all the open orders, set the...

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

Ok, I just thought of something: the uptick rule. Could that have something to do with it?

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

I did a short on NRF with IB's MKT and the time set to OPG which I understand is a market at open order. I don't know of any other way to do it with IB so I hope that is correct. With my MB account it says "market-on-open" but IB you do market and OPG for the time. The open was 9.49 and I...

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

I've done several days of testing with a small lot of 100 shares, and most of the time I'm filled at the open but maybe 25% of the time I'm filled at a different price. Today I shorted one at the open and got filled 1.2% under. I just checked and this stock seems to have a bigger spread than...

Max amount of daily volume one can trade without disrupting

I'm interested in a few thinly traded stocks, let's say 100k/day. What is the most number of shares I can buy/sell without disrupting the prices? For example if the stock is $3 and I want to buy $100k worth then my activity would be 1/3 or 1/4 of the daily volume and I'd end up driving up...

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

This is easy to say, but inquiring minds would like to know why? So far we have: #1- invalid / erroneous data #2 - difficulty getting filled #3 - market conditions change For a hypothetical example, let's say we identify a trigger that will produce a big gain. At the time of the...

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

I think this would be a problem if the price data is less accurate against you. It could easily be more accurate in your favor. I've noticed data discrepancies before when comparing charts and fills so it's always an issue.

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

I think 1500 trades is fine, or even 300. But 3 weeks of data isn't that much. Trends change, for example that 3 weeks could be down and you start trading and then the trend changes and goes up and the system doesn't work any more. I wonder why they limit it to 3 weeks? In the video they...

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

Thanks communistmonkey, very interesting comments there. Especially about testing the system with data that it wasn't written against. I watched this video from trade-ideas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhzftR6B4ig They show a system that is 41% winning trades but has around 3:1 reward...

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

After not being successful at discretionary trading, I've decided that I will not trade any more until I have a system that has backtested positive. I just watched a video on you tube about the trade ideas oddsmaker. They make it look so simple. In just 8 minutes they produced a strategy...

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

I just started using market on open orders and I'd like to know if they are always filled at the open price. Let's say in the first 5 minutes the stock goes down 1%. Would the market on open order get filled at the open or is there a risk that it would get filled at less? And how much less...
