    65% win ratio with 1:1 risk/reward?

Come on guys, this is an interesting thread let's keep it civil. :) I'm sure everyone would appreciate any hints to helping achieve a better system.

    65% win ratio with 1:1 risk/reward?

I agree with this. I can tell you what I've done to try and combat it. I have been testing with YTD data because we have had a correction, a flat period, a bull rally, and now another correction. So 2008 is pretty representative (unlike 2005 & 2006 for example). I then test each phase...

    65% win ratio with 1:1 risk/reward?

I'm glad I found your thread cause I have just came to the same conclusion. I've been working for a month now on backtesting and forward testing a few systems. I was trying for the classic 3:1 reward/risk ratio. The first system ended up with a 60% 1.5 ratio. It was the best I could do...

Why are some stocks not shortable?

I'm only trading nasdaq & amex. Do they have a similar list? One stock I wanted to short went down 10% yesterday. So I'm wondering why they're not shortable? Not all do that, some go up. I imagine they go up easily if no one can short them. But the one that dropped 10% would have been...

Why are some stocks not shortable?

Got an interesting message from IB today: I didn't take them up on it, it was way too late and the almost 2% premium is too much. but it was nice of them to offer.

Why are some stocks not shortable?

Too bad for Royal, went down big time. I kept my eye on both IB & MB and neither would let me short it. :(

Why are some stocks not shortable?

For my scan for today there is ROYL.

Why are some stocks not shortable?

I've noticed that some stocks which show up on my scans aren't shortable. I'm curious what the reasons are for this. I've heard that IB allows you to short almost any stock, but I always find a lot that aren't shortable. I also check with MB Trading & Fidelity, they won't let me short them...

IB execution on live versus paper trade

Today I couldn't get a fill at all with the sim account. I was bummed, I had 5 stocks that I could sell. All I could do was watch them go down. Very strange. It's almost worth $1 to trade 1 share with my real account..

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

"Wall street doesn't change because human nature doesn't change." Paraphrased from a quote from jesse livermore. :)

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

This test isn't reliable because you can't control how many others have their stops. At the same moment you put your stop for test 1, someone else could have put a stop for 5000 shares and he got stopped out (and you with him).

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

So, to hide orders does that mean we should avoid limit orders? Does IB have an order type for hiding orders? I'm not yet convinced that my 100 share lots are going to impact the market but I'm hoping to build up capital and confidence to trade larger lots. :)

Do people get same results with real trading as backtesting?

But if I understand correctly, this is what IB's scaling feature is designed to avoid. It puts out 1 limit order at a time. you pick the # of shares. for example limit 100 10.00 limit 100 10.01 limit 100 10.02 but AFAIK the public only sees one at a time. I appreciate you...

NYSE MOO Fills Worse Since 11/1/07?

I too have noticed very bad fills using MOO compared to the published open price (I've compared with fidelity, ib, & yahoo). The other day it was off 4% and that totally killed me. So for now I see no other option but to avoid trading NYSE stocks. The Amex doesn't give me the open every...

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

Very interesting thread, I see I'm not the only one. Thanks for the link. The bottom line is that if one depends on the open price for a strategy (to verify against previous tests or backtesting) then it's best to skip the NYSE. MOO is unpredictable. I'll experiment with how a limit...

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

Sorry, i'm a little slow. It's weird for me because with NASDAQ 99% of the time I get the exact opening price to the penny. So I'd expect the other exchanges to work similarly. 4% difference is huge. It would seem that the opening price should be set so that all the open queued orders...

Execute order at a specific time

I tested out the Good After Time feature of IB. It's hard to know all this stuff exists because IB hides them and you have to activate them (Good After Time, OCA, etc.) Anyway, I put in my orders 15 minutes before close and it worked perfectly. But the results were mixed, I got better...

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

My point is that if my backtesting depends on getting the open price and I can't get it with NYSE stocks then I have no choice but to not trade them. If I don't get filled at the opening price with NYSE then I'm wondering who is? and how?

MOO market on open - does one always get the open price?

Just to update the thread, I quit placing MOO for NYSE stocks due to poor fills. I'm now noticing the same thing with Amex. Today I got a fill almost 4% off the opening price. This is totally unacceptable. For Nasdaq, I get the exact opening price almost every time. I think I will...

Execute order at a specific time

Is it possible to specify an order to execute at a specific time? I like to close out at the end of day but I don't want to wait until 4pm because there are often reversals. I'd like to close out at 3:45. Is it possible? I'm using IB.
