With Carlsen, it's not surprising when he strings together 3, 4, or 5 wins in a row. Interesting that the late, great Korchnoi (RIP) doesn't have a very high opinion of him. http://chess-news.ru/en/node/18174

TSLA earnings Wednesday August 03, after the bell. PCLN August 04.

Earnings season is one of the best times to trade! Too bad it's only four times a year.

So who will win the Sinquefield Cup? Vachier-Lagrave is hot. Caruana is certainly a favorite. Nakamura. Indian Tiger. Aronian? I always want Aronian to go back to his best level, where he can beat just about anyone.

Earnings Next Week - The Four Horsemen

I expressed limited move with a butterfly; shorting strangles into earnings is not my style either. But nice job!

Earnings Next Week - The Four Horsemen

I missed. I didn't expect up move to be that strong. My slightly bullish position: Long calendar 8/5-7/29 99C @ 0.16 My bearish (somewhat) 7/29 93P/92P/89.5P +1/-1/-1 @ 0.02 If AAPL comes back down, my calendar might be okay.

Yes, Karjakin should try to press early. Although I would have preferred a Carlsen-Caruana match, I'm looking forward to this one.

Nakamura beats Carlsen in Bilbao! Finally got that monkey off his back!

Calendar spread value relative to IV

That's similar to what I do, except I usually start earlier than one week before expiration, and usually do double calendars. If I have a strong feeling of direction, I would put on an OTM single calendar. Right now, I have such a position on AMZN, as I have been bullish on that stock.

    Straddles, are they ever profitable?

I have been long straddles as a stand-alone position for earnings play, when I thought the move was going to be greater than the cost.

Down move is not over. Bought SPY calendar 7/15-6/30 200P.

    Post BrExit Vol

Good, the SPX went back up after futures were down more than 100 points - my short SPY puts are okay. My other positions - short TLT puts, short VXX calls, and even my double calendar leftover are all doing great. Talk about dumb luck!

    Post BrExit Vol

Thanks. I had expected a down move after the BrExit vote down to around 1980-2000 level, but not this precipitously!

    Post BrExit Vol

No problem for me on that position - I took off all but a token few contracts to see what would happen to it on Friday. The "problem" I have is my naked SPY 6/24 200P position! :)

Holy Guacamole! No vol crush for Friday.

    Post BrExit Vol

That would be the best case scenario, if it lands near the put strike at the end of the day. If it's an early, sharp drop there, I will look at the charts to try to determine what to do next. I took off most of the position anyway, but I want to see what happens with the rest tomorrow.

    Post BrExit Vol

What I really wanted was to range trade until right before (safer) or possibly right after BrExit. I chose 205-213 range. I could have put on an iron condor or fly on Tuesday instead, but thinking vol will continue to go higher before the vote I didn't like it, which is why I chose a calendar...

    Post BrExit Vol

Not sure I understand. I don't know how to forecast vol - I just use Black Scholes to determine IV. I expected vol to stay strong up to today, and with front IV high I decided to put on a calendar spread. The strikes were chosen based on my charts.

    Post BrExit Vol

Any idea what vol will be tomorrow? I put on the following SPY Double Calendar trade on Tuesday: +JUL8 213C +JUL8 205P -JUN24 213C -JUN24 205P The position is doing well, but I plan to hold it through Friday. I'm hoping the vol drop won't be like in earnings report, and hope there is some...

    VIX fly / spread journal

If you're thinking of just calendars instead of flies, do you ever put on ratio calendars for hedging, like -5JUL/+6AUG, or straight calendars with some other hedge, like SPY?
