Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

I am doing this more for meeting a challenge now, not for saving a few bucks. :) (Plus I really hate to wait, when I want to do something...) Interesting new issue: The new SSD that I installed Win7 on (from the desktop)... when I plugged it into the SATA #2 position on the laptop...

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Thanks for the suggestion WaveStrider. My HP laptop CMOS menu was very clear... that there are only 3 choices to boot: 1) From built-in DVD 2) From SATA hard drive 3) From the network There was no option for booting from USB. I know some of the older firmwares did not support booting...

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

I have Acronis Image Home 2013. It does support restoring to dissimilar hardware. But it just duh'ed on me that I wouldn't be able to boot up the Acronis Image Home 2013 program from the CD - same problem why I couldn't boot up to the Win7 installation DVD... DVD drive hardware issue. This...

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Tried that too. Didn't work. I could use F8 to get to the choices of what to do, and select SAFE MODE. But as soon as it started to bootstrap SAFE MODE, blue screen again and back to the same cycle.

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Tried this approach earlier. Didn't work. When I plugged in a working DVD (SATA) to the SATA connection on the laptop, with the Win7 installation DVD in it... the laptop just sat there. Did nothing. Wouldn't boot. Eventually timed out and said no bootable device.

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Hi mokwit: Thanks for your link. I am not entirely a big fan of cloning. I only clone out of desparations. Right now my situation is I can't boot the installation disk with the bad built-in DVD drive and I am trying to get around it.

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Thanks for the suggestion jinxu. I think one of such app is "EaseUS Todo Backup". I have that (free version). But now I have a different issue: that mounting the existing SSD (SATA #1) and the new SSD (SATA #2) on the laptop, for some reason Windows does not see the new SSD at all. I have...

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Thanks for the suggestions, blah12345678. Unfortunately my laptop costs me way over $1000. It is one that has a 18.3 inch screen (which I like very much and no vendor seems to offer it any more with the new models) and an i7 processor. If it was only a $300 laptop I would buy a new one in a...

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Thanks for the additional idea. I will give that a try. Not sure if I can force it to go to safe mode. As the blue screen happens very fast - about 2 seconds into booting Windows normally. It has to be some driver or some configuration that is way wrong.

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

I think my version of Acronis Image Home can do restore to dissimilar hardware too. Thanks. I need to check.

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

I am not partial to laptops either, Scat. Nor to tablets, nor to iphones. I just need something that addresses my need. And I hate gadgets without a keyboard or can only type with miniature fingers. The limitation with laptops is there is not much you can do to modify things. I do pretty...

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Thanks for the suggestions. I am not partial to Windows, but my trading software (TradeStation and RealTick) would not support Linux. We are driven by the trading software. I am trying to get the OS on the new SSD without investing more money into this lemon (buying a replacement loptop...

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Hmmm... Thanks for the suggestion murrica. That should be possible. There are 2 drive bays in this laptop. Each one is a SATA connection. I will just plug in a SATA DVD drive to the second set and see if I can use it. Thanks! Will try tomorrow.

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

Thanks for the advice Bob111. I can deal with calling Microsoft and provide explanations on the licensing issues. My concern is on the technical aspect. I just tried it. Win7 installed okay on the new SSD via my desktop. But when mounted on the laptop and tried to boot with it, blue...

Creative solution to install Win7 on new SSD, laptop

I've gotten a HP laptop (it's a lemon... but that's a different story)... Just purchased a new SSD 256 GB. Wanted to use it as a primary drive for Windows and my essential data storage on the laptop. I have the Win7 Ultimate installation disk (DVD). Problem: The built-in DVD-RW on the...

    Card to support 4 monitors

    >>>>> What are the advantages and disadvantages of both these options? i.e. Obviously i would save a lot of money if I simply install another card in an open slot. <<<<< From a software perspective, this is really a no-big-deal. Whether you have 1 card x 4 mon, or 2 cards @2 mon each, or 4...

    Card to support 4 monitors

    >>>>> I have many slots available. <<<<< You need to be careful with that. Having many available, empty slots is one thing. Are they all of the same kind? For example, many motherboards have a mix of the old PCI, or the older AGP, along with the new (current) PCI Express buses. Mostly...

    Card to support 4 monitors

Must you use only 1 card to support 4 monitors? It's a matter of available expansion slots. If you can do 2 cards, your cost will most likely be much lower (to use 2 dual cards as Scat suggested) for the same function.
