Nixon Shock: 50 Years Ago Today

Point is, most of the schemes that politicians come up with are bad ideas in the longer term. But in the short term, they get re-elected, as did Richard Nixon in 1972. LBJ, (in 1968) not so much.

Nixon Shock: 50 Years Ago Today

Yes these days, vote buying for both the right and the left. But in this case (late 1960s) the VietNam War was LBJ's darling pet project. By 1968, it was obvious that LBJ was championing an un-win-able war. The best of America's future (18-26 year old men) were being selected as "canon fodder"...

Pull over Jeeves, time for A nice day at the beach. Bikinis all around.

Clean beaches cost money. I used to go to Cape May, NJ Every night they sift the sand on the beach with a rig that probably costs $150K, maybe much more. (New Holland Agricultural tractor + 3pt hitch implement). They were using two sets of these, obviously to complete before sunrise.

Best Sites to Set Up Filters

I have never used them, but Stockcharts.com calls them "Scans" And I don't know what is free, what isn't. Advanced Scan Workbench But the parts of Stockcharts that I do use, I like. They have some data (indices) that go back 100 years. (depending on subscription level)

Nixon Shock: 50 Years Ago Today

"Actually, a good case is frequently made by economists that decoupling from the gold standard has given the United States outsized prestige" The "U.S. Dollar" as the world reserve currency was officially agreed on at Bretton Woods. And it was only made possible by the U.S. having huge gold...

For Those Successful ET Members: Did You Have A Mentor?

Originally Series 7 in 1982. 20 guys in the office. Dean Witter. Retail. You learn a lot from other's mistakes there, less costly than learning from your own mistakes. (I think Ben Franklin said something about that too). And general lessons on humility from the older guys, no substitute for...

AGs all jumped today at 12:00 est

You're funny. I'm long all of them (the etfs), mostlly from last August. weat, corn, cane (Sugar) beans (soyb) is new for me. You just don't see these kinds of charts often. "Saucer" patterns. I think they come at major bottoms. I remember seeing them in 1982-1984, mostly in building materials...

GDP Growth Under Trump Was the Worst Since Hoover

$CRB index is up 22% since Biden was Inaugurated. That's more that 40% annualized. To match that, the average worker would need to get raises 40%/year. At this pace, Biden can't get re-elected and will be gently phased out ... health reasons.

Toyota is quietly pushing Congress to slow the shift to electric vehicles

Whatever Whiz-Bang technology Musk or anybody else claims, still requires money (a lot of it) to get implemented. Where's the money coming from? Everybody is broke. Local, states and Federal. Just think of the stuff-hitting-the-fan moment when the first state admits that they can't pay $100K+...

Can you use your losses to lower your capital gain tax?

no. But I was Series 7 Registered in NJ long time ago (1980's). I just assume it's still there. Full disclosure, I now get my 1040 taxes done by a CPA firm in NJ. They never told me that any of that was wrong, or that the NJ rule had changed.

Toyota is quietly pushing Congress to slow the shift to electric vehicles

*** I'd have to agree with that. I have a late model Honda. It has "Adaptive cruise control" (it will brake to a stop) and "Lane assist" (It will try to stay between the painted lines). But if the painted lines are not visible (snow, leaves ...) it doesn't work. I think the "futurists" see what...

Can you use your losses to lower your capital gain tax?

... I believe the Federal loss allowed is 50% of $6,000 for a total of $3K loss per year, ant the total loss carry-forward is reduced by $6K. In other words, Losses are written off dollar for dollar against gains in the same year. Then you lose 50% of your write off against income every year...

What's Easier - Swing Trading or Day Trading?

Most of the billionaire traders (Buffett, Ray Dalio, etc) are swing traders. Perhaps Jim Simons is an exception. But anybody who thinks they're another Jim Simons should not be allowed near either sharp objects or money. What was the question again?
