Are you guys prepared for this bear market +5 years?

Amen to that. The current market environment is just par for the course for me, since I've always traded futures. I don't think that people who made money in the late 90's trading stocks are necessarily very good traders. If a trade went against you, you could just turn it into a position...

Gambler's fallacy vs. Theory of Probablity

The problem with expectancy in the markets, as I see it, is that you never know if the past results of a system or methodology (either real or hypothetical), will match the future results. For example, you may have a system that has had a 60% expectancy in the past, but you have no idea...

Equivalent of gamblersanonymous for traders :)

Yes. The equivalent of Gambler's Anonymous for traders is Gambler's Anonymous. According to Dr. Van K. Tharp in his Peak Performance Course, Gambler's Anonymous first recognized stock, options and commodities as a means of gambling in 1986.

If your success is related to education...

Every level of education in this poll has more people responding that they are profitable rather than losing. I don't think you can draw any significant conclusions from this poll, other than the fact that successful traders are more likely to respond to polls than unsuccessful traders.

    Is trading really risky?

No, trading isn't risky. It's quite easy, and fun too, not to mention extremely lucrative. I recommend trading for anyone who wants to work part-time and make lots of money by just sitting in front of a computer and pressing a few buttons now and then.

How much is enough to start trading?

I think 10 - 25k is fine for a trading account, but that doesn't take into account all of the other expenses a trader incurs, such as data feed, software, equipment, seminars, tuition, books, etc.

    Log Keeping Software

I use the Record Keeper module that is part of Option-Vue. I'm not sure if it has all of the features that you're looking for, but it does a pretty good job and I especially like the Performance Analysis Summary, which gives a nice breakdown of your trading statistics for any given period of...

    Globex emini nightly highs/lows

I don't know of a web site that posts that info, but I get it by either: A) setting my chart preferences to All Sessions (Globex day and night), and then noting the overnight high and low via an intraday or daily chart, or B) setting my chart preferences to Globex Night only. This creates...

My dog Shreddy got run over by a car and I can't sleep

nitro, Sorry to hear about your pup. Hope he gets better soon. A couple of years ago, my Rottweiler, Max, got bone cancer and I had to put him to sleep a couple of months later when it got too bad. It killed me. I have a little memorial for him in the living room. I still get bummed...

    The Encyclopedia of Trading Strategies

It's ok if you want explanations of what the various indicators are and how they're calculated, but all that backtesting and stuff they did was junk. Once in a while, I want to look something up and wish I didn't throw it away (with about a hundred other books on trading), but I wouldn't buy...

Is THIS what trading's all about ??

vegasoul, Are you aphexcoil in disguise? If not, then now there are TWO people on ET that are worse traders than I am. I'm moving up in the world. I guess there is some hope after all. :p (and it only took me eight years of trading, $200k, and a couple of years of therapy to get here)

    Trading Plan

Just a couple of observations: You said you were going to start small in November and then ramp up. Be very careful during the holidays and on Fridays before long weekends. I would suggest that you not trade at all during the week of Thanksgiving or during the last 1-1/2 weeks of December...

    Who's responsible?

sababa, I had a similar situation occur a while back. The problem is that Globex doesn't take stop orders, only stop-limit orders for the e-minis. Stop orders are held in a separate server someplace and entered as market orders when your price is hit. I don't know what would have...

    Swing Trading

Natalie, Good question. According to Linda Raschke in Street Smarts, "Swing trading is anticipating the market's next move, and asking what is the most probable outcome." She also quotes Charles Dow as describing an active method of trading (swing trading) as "dealing in active markets...
