Looking for Sponsors for a University Trading Competition...ideas?

Oops I see I hadn't read the OP's post properly -- you're already saying it's not going to be just the highest p/l wins. Good.

Looking for Sponsors for a University Trading Competition...ideas?

This might sound odd but you might consider including p/l volatility, max drawdown, commissions and fees and other metrics as part of your competition. Something that can demonstrate control and discipline. Sharpe ratio? VaR? You see. As another poster mentioned, competitions based on gains...

    short-term crude

This has some good links. http://ftalphaville.ft.com/blog/2009/07/28/64201/evil-commodities-speculators-in-the-dock/ That CFTC man Gary Gensler has a fascinating haircut... a mullet I think, right? Lobster mullet? See the vid in the link... Interesting about oil: Shitty sulfury Oman crude...

    grain spreaders

I can't speak for bean spreads but it's certainly done a lot with eurodollar interest rate futures. Speaking of eurodollars, looking at nov 10 beans (after the recommend to try x9/x0) made me think it's almost like trading an interest rate, the thing is so far out. Nov 10, there can't be any...

    grain spreaders

Interesting. I'd like to get into oil v meal but have to watch it and study up first... Are the new crop calendar spreads usually pretty tame? Exhibit real seasonality or just follow the front month of new crop? Could Nov - Jan beans fall to maybe -15 or so? Any words of wisdom on that...

    grain spreaders

I've been looking at the various bean calendar spreads mostly. But I trade across various markets and don't always understand ag that well (yet more to learn). Anything catching your eye as far as action? Think Q/X can go south of 70 in the beans?

    short-term crude

How often do you think directional options trades are on the right side of the market? Weren't a lot of $100 calls coming in when WTI was at $70?

Thanks OG -- are you on the NYMEX floor? And got any idea what to make of the WTI-Brent spread? Is it really Asian demand for sour crudes bring up by extension Brent over WTI? http://ftalphaville.ft.com/blog/2009/07/22/63186/nothing-bullish-in-crude/#

    Dualflation

I realized after posting this that I'd made at least one error, saying there's no evidence of fewer companies. Of course there are fewer companies as businesses fail. I guess there have been a great deal of failures in the UK. What I should have said is that there's no evidence I've seen of less...

    Dualflation

Anyway, sorry to say but there seem to be some flaws here. First is international competition -- you seem to dismiss it entirely. Since you place your inflation in the realm of manufactured goods, this is a glaring omission. Um, China? Second is that we have not seen any evidence of fewer...

Futures: Could bid/ask bias in mini-contract vs big be used as contrary indicator?

Or, especially with gold, is it possible that smaller traders as a whole have an almost permanently bullish bias? After all, gold attracts a certain (often paranoid) crowd...

Futures: Could bid/ask bias in mini-contract vs big be used as contrary indicator?

Trading gold futures today I noticed that e-minis showed a bias compared to the normal COMEX contract. For example the COMEX bid/ask would be 6 at 7, and the e-mini would show 7 at 9. This upward bias seemed pretty consistent and I'm wondering if it couldn't be used as a kind of small vs...

    Dualflation

First, Japanese savings have been invested overseas to a very large degree, helping in some cases to develop countries whose new companies can now compete with the Japanese in their traditional export markets. Second, the idea that savings and investment are equal seems spurious. If I lend...
