Brokers allowing client name vs street name registration

I also think that giving brokerage customers actual ownership of their assets via direct customer registration is the way to solve this systemic security problem. I hope IB will act as long as enough customers request it...

IB customers: vote for better security!

Remember, while IB having excess SIPC insurance is laudable, the maximum Lloyd's will pay out under this insurance is 150 million to all accounts. This compares to about 4 billion of equity in hedge fund and prop trading group accounts at IB, that can be assumed to on average be substantially...

IB customers: vote for better security!

The "IB hypothecation" thread has gone to 200 posts and 20 thousand views in just a few days. Rather than trying to become a hypothecation expert in countless hours, why don't we make sure our stocks and assets belong to us in the first place? The industry practice of holding assets in...

Can What Happened to MF Happen to IB?

Well, at least for stocks there is such system. It's called the stock register. Wall St just chooses to register customers' shares in street name. IB CUSTOMERS: Please vote on my feature poll 7549 which would provide an inexpensive way to insure up to 100 percent account security even for...

Can What Happened to MF Happen to IB?

Contrary to Corzine, who was willing to bet everything for bigger business, IB's Peterffy has so far shown that he is willing to sacrifice profit to increase safety. Exhibits are the recent margin elimination on small caps and his refusal to go ahead with Refco and M F takeovers even though he...

Is IB safe enough to use as a bank for > 500,000 USD?

I don't see a compelling reason why these issues necessarily need to be connected. Even though ownership of your house is registered with you does not prevent a bank giving you a mortgage on it with the house as collateral. IB can modify it's Terms of service in such a way so they have the...

Is IB safe enough to use as a bank for > 500,000 USD?

Right. T-Bills give you protection like stocks, that is better than cash, at a lower margin "cost". However the protection is not better than "your" stocks held in street name. Sorry i did not see your posting earlier. And my postings seem to be delayed quite a while.

Is IB safe enough to use as a bank for > 500,000 USD?

Why is that? Are these T-Bills in my IB account registered in my name then? And returned to me no matter what happens to IB? Can you explain how this works in practice? From what i have read, SIPC makes no difference between treasury securities and stocks.

Is IB safe enough to use as a bank for > 500,000 USD?

On a day like this, i am relieved that my money is with IB as opposed to MF Global. However, it also shows that "segregated customer accounts" do not offer ultimate protection for customers since the broker/dealer can accidentally or purposefully underfund them. Therefore, larger accounts...
