    Interactive Brokers for day-trading Futures?

IB is definitely a margin Nazi, but if you're carrying a large cash balance, I can't think of a safer direct access broker. Their API is also very capable, if you know what you're doing.

Automated trading with R on IB

Why drive 6 hours to see this clown? Sounds like a smart guy, but I doubt you'll learn anything beyond what's already been described in the docs.

Automated trading with R on IB

What do you mean? How can I experience something that's not possible? It can't handle professional data feeds. You want to micro trade against the best of the best, using IB data and unstable front ends? Just donate your money to UNICEF. Every child deserves a chance. This software is in no way...

Automated trading with R on IB

Enough of this nonsense. IBrokers cannot be trusted for live trade management. Maybe it’s ok just to pull data from IB API, but no serious retail trader automates with this shit.

Automated trading with R on IB

Now that’s funny :) But seriously, I wouldn’t use any statistical geared software (R, Excel, Python) for live automated execution. They’re good in conjunction with proven robust third party platforms.

How to overcome the inability to accept small losses when wrong on trades?

There might be a mental aspect, but it has nothing to do with generating a profit, which is based on knowledge, experience, information, resources, and probability.

    Nooby McNoob becomes a quant

Makes much sense, as I see no point of analyzing variations of a method without proven implementation and robustness.

Just wondering when does a trader become a gambler?

Yes. They don’t get it. I’ve never personally met a successful large scale speculator, who hasn’t embraced the fact that they’re gambling. Only read about them.

    Nooby McNoob becomes a quant

Sounds awesome. I think you’ll turn out to be a real prodigy :) Your journal has inspired me to possibly start my own. I’m getting a little bored with the site content here, and it will allow me to stay active on occasion.

Please be serious. Your insulting our intelligence (at least mine) :)

    I was a senior trader. Now I’m a programmer. Here’s why

This is quite true. A level of user input will always be needed. No perfect black boxes here. You’ll find those in fantasyland. In regards to building, my live production systems spent nearly two years in a quantitative research phase using statistical software, before converting the logic to...

    I was a senior trader. Now I’m a programmer. Here’s why

Not so much nowadays. A program can execute them faster in an event driven environment. By the time a manual trader recognizes an opportunity on one instrument, an algorithm could have entered the same instrument and 100 other correlated ones. Primary purpose of automation is to capture...

Of course. You can do 1200 plays.

Good point, but I’d rather live off my investments and just exercise and read. It doesn’t sound like this fellow was a good investor.

25 year run? Sounds like an old codger, probably 50+ Last thing i'd want to do is learn programming after age 50. Life is too short

Historical Data for Index Futures to Download to Excel

Great tool, but Excel can be a real dog with formulas. Multiple worksheets within a workbook helps. Multiple workbooks is even better, but a pain to manage. I limit worksheets to 15 max per workbook. I switched to 64bit Excel a few years back, and it seems to run smoother with my macros. I also...

Is active trading a viable job for an individual?

I liked marketsurfer. He’d tell it how it is. What happened to him?

Just wondering when does a trader become a gambler?

Risk of ruin by a thousand cuts. Still side bets (especially options), just slower bleeding.
