A simple but not easy question -- What is trend?

If you can convince yourself the price is going up or down for a prolonged period of time, there's your trend. What you see is a trend may not be what I see as a trend - I argue this with a good friend all the time. To him, a 10-15 point ES move isn't a trend, because he's looking at a 1-day...

Slaughtering Bears - like fish in a barrel

On those 3:30 rallies Friday and today yes, it was like shooting fish in a barrel....very easy to do one of those "jump on the train" type of strong trend trades and come away big with a runner or two.

    ES insane rally

Yep --- this afternoon and last Friday afternoon were amazing parabolic trends that going long on the ES was like shooting fish in a barrel. :) Enjoy it while it lasts -- I sure am!

    Goldman's New $70 oil call....

....just saw the news on Bloomberg TV. I have to laugh -- when it was heading up, they were all screaming $150! 150! 150! Now that the economies are tanking, they're coming in at $70! 70! 70! How much do you want to bet if/when the DJX crosses 10K they raise oil over $100 again? The herd...

    need help - tension

Not sure if this helps any but even though I'm a very conservative trader, in the past week I was VERY VERY hesitant to enter ES futures trades because I felt the tape was too fast or goofy or whipsawwy. You know .... you enter a position, ice flows through your veins, gut churns up, and you...

    OXPS down? (10-10)

Can't log into the site, and when I am able, I get kicked out after a few minutes......streaming quotes are nonexistent, etc. Big volume day,of course ... anyone else having problems at OXPS or elsewhere?

    options brokers - suggestion ?

ThinkorSwim OXPS ... though I just moved to ToS this month because the ToS platform is vastly better than OXPS website interface

**Breaking News FED and Banks looking to shut down Exchanges**

Unless I am forgetting something -- and I wasn't daytrading back then -- the exchanges were closed from Tuesday 9/11 until the following Monday. That was 4 full trading days, not two weeks. But to close down the exchanges for months? I highly doubt that, with respect to your sources.

    First foray in trading ES

That's an interesting semantical point - knowing that it's a personal thing from individual to individual, what's the general consensus on P/L tracking? I'm not one to go for all the percentages/ratios and stuff to market "my" success, and what I think is acceptable to me may be laughable to...

    Timing QQQQ

Interesting stuff here .... though after perusing the entire thread out of a case of insomnia last night (ugh!) I was curious what you're basing your timing / "system" on ... because, no offense, I see a bunch of BUY or SELL calls and some decent returns, but based on what? A periodic news...

    First foray in trading ES

Mean reversion, as far as I know, is a counter-trend strategy .... those have's been dangerous to me since that's trying to pick tops and bottoms. Been burned too many times doing that. I'm a trend trader, but when the price 'reverts' or retraces to a set point, I may re-enter a trend trade...

    First foray in trading ES

Congrats on joining the world of futures traders ... looks like you're off to a good start!

You Full-Time Traders - What is it you call yourself?

"I pick that rabbit out of the hat while everybody sits out there wondering how the hell we did it." (apologies to Gordon Gekko!) ...does that make me a magician, sorceror, or wizard? :) Seriously, I trade parttime now, so I still call myself a "consultant" and use all my "consulting"...

how different is the real world trading from a trading on a simulator?

Psychological, mainly. Paper-trading I would run 8 ES futures contracts w/o blinking an eye. Even though I'm well-capitalized, I started slowly in the real market, and good thing --- when I went "live" having only 2 contracts in the market terrified me with ice in my veins until I closed...

    Insane day today!

Agreed ... lot of what you say there is what I've believed for a while now. No pretense or ego, just some well-thought-out thoughts and comments. Great job!

    Your trading style

Oh I was less concerned about MY computers as the data feed dropping or a chart locking ... though of course I could always have my DSL die or trading system reboot. :) Better safe than sorry, though!

    IB Margin Increases Tomorrow Afternoon

Funny I saw a few IB commercials on Bloomberg today ... not the 'bouncing balls' one on CNBC talking about cheaper commissions and throwing "blah point blah blah percent" figures out there, but rather a quieter, more professional one aimed at a more serious investor looking for an online broker...

How this newbie turned the tide.

Amen! I would add one more -- "find what works for YOU" based on YOUR risk tolerances, goals, and personality.

Color coding for MA with OEC

For the most part OEC's charting suits my needs quite well. I do find the customization stuff to be a bit quirky [1] and less-than-intuitive, and gave up trying to develop my own indicators or custom charts there as a result. But otherwise I find their platform and data quite reliable and I'm...
