Starting a fund / raising capital

I will also echo that I have enjoyed and appreciate some of the color I have gotten from this thread. I am lucky in that I have built enough capital of my own that raising outside money is far from a necessity. It sounds like Heech was in a similar situation when he started.

Starting a fund / raising capital

I will share some learnings I've had on the tax front. For someone with substantial income and limited deductions, there isn't a clear cut option. As a disclaimer, I'm no tax professional, so my understanding can be wrong. Treating myself as unemployed: No self employment tax. + Can't...

Post fiscal cliff tax planning for traders

I think you should be glad if futures traders get to keep the benefit of the 60/40 LT/ST tax treatment. I can understand an argument of why it exists but I don't think it was not intended to provide preferential tax benefit to specualtive short term traders of futures.

    2012 taxes from daytrading....shaking here

If your gain is from wash sales, sounds like you should consider electing trader tax status (assuming you qualify for it) which allows you to mark to market gains and losses. It isn't easy to have such a large discrepency from wash sales alone. You can only get it if you realized losses on...

Apple - great company but -------

People make too big a deal out of Jobs, I think. When you're running such a huge company and you already have such a good product in the iphone (some would argue that its already perfect), you just don't want to change it because you're afraid of taking risks and hurting something that's...

Apple - great company but -------

Apple makes an unprecedented 30%+ operating margin which I've never seen sustained in the consumer electronics sector to the extent that they have. They do this by selling their products at a huge mark up. They are able to do this because they have a great premium brand and loyal customers...

Starting a fund / raising capital

Yeah I know its neither the marginal nor the average. Just my fuzzy math to make the rate seem higher because I'm really a little bit freaked out about how high my taxes are going to be.

Starting a fund / raising capital

Does anyone know whether or not you can contribute to a regular and/or a roth ira if you elect professional trader tax status and what the maximum contribution would be?

Starting a fund / raising capital

I think I messed up and double counted the Obamacare tax because I was confused with the wording from some articles I was reading. So the marginal tax rate would be 55% which is a lot better than 59%. I'm planning on talking to a tax professional (hopefully one that specializes in traders)...

Starting a fund / raising capital

Great year so far. Made 860k representing 150% return. I am quite concerned with taxes next year. Federal tax rates going up. Medicare taxes will now be on unearned income as well when previously they were just on earned income and the rate is going up too. New Obamacare tax on investment...

We Outsource to China, and they Outsource to Robots

Are you kidding me? There are plenty of developing countries with cheap labor costs where manufacturing will go to before the US. We have been seeing companies shift manufacturing from China to lower cost countries like Vietnam for the past several years. There will always be some niche...

Is my math wrong. FB only worth 1.65 a share?

I'll give you a hint. Your numbers are way off and that no real investors use an EPS number from yahoo finance or where ever you're getting it.

Stay away from fundamental analysis before you hurt yourself.

    FB and short term memory

That would be good since it means they have a lot more room to grow their user base.

I dont get it. Who is buying all the Facebook shares ?

Bought a bunch more shares yesterday. Most of my position established at around $20. Now my largest position by a significant margin. Originally I wanted to add after the Q3 report but now I think the mobile monetization story is getting out there and that they are monetizing mobile more...

This is a manipulated bull market, how long can it last?

My last boss was a perma bear. Whether or not you are a perma bear or a perma bull, you gotta be pretty cocky to think you know so much as to maintain a consistent opinion regardless of all the varying positive or negative datapoints that come out all the time.

Let me try summarize my impression of some of the advantages and disadvantages of the managed account vs private fund structure. These are just my impressions, much of which have been gleaned from ET, so I could be wrong. Anyone with knowledge on the subject please chime in. Managed account...

Starting a fund / raising capital

I agree that a two year track record is not a long time. I have acknowledged myself that I often wonder what level of returns are sustainable. To be fair, my monthly returns have 0.012 r2 with the S&P500, so its clear my returns aren't the result of a correct macro call. I think there are much...
