Trying to make it on my own

My trading style is a bit different. Most of my time is spent researching companies to prepare myself for the actual trading decisions. So there's really no need to take a break from research

Trying to make it on my own

Today I sit here somewhat annoyed and discouraged, being down about 20k MTD on the core trading strategy in just 3 trading days. Partly I am peeved from being down about 6k on a marginal trade today that arguably I shouldn't have taken. Making things significantly worse has been my large net...

    Possibility of a US default

Glancing thru some of the posts here, it seems like many believe that the US can't default on its interest payments, since tax receipts greatly exceed that of interest payments. However, this line of thinking seems to ignore two factors. I am no expert on the subject so correct me if I am wrong...

Trying to make it on my own

Got news that I passed CFA level 2 today. Studying was a distraction for the months of April and May. Hopefully this helps me if and when I start looking for work agian.

I don't like to sharpe or st dev as a measurement of risk for various reasons. Lets say you have two strategies. In one strategy you take small losses quickly but let your winners run. In the other strategy you let both losers and winners ride until your strategy gives you an exit signal...

My Automated Trading Strategy (3Years+ of Historical Data) Please Critique!

Yeah I wish was where you are now at your age. I did start investing in stocks around 14 as well, but it was mostly nonsense. Didn't really do anything meaningful until after 21. You seem to be doing some pretty impressive stuff here. Keep us posted on how your strategy works out.

Trying to make it on my own

What's so complicated by being net neutral on a beta adj. basis. The simple idea is that you can be long 100 value of one stock and short 100 value of another and still have macro risk since one stock has more beta than the other. The idea is if one stock has a beta of 2, and another has a beta...

Trying to make it on my own

I posted my equity curve in the first post. Those show you daily p/l from the core strategy, assuming I traded that day. That should give you a good sense of volatility. As for my long term strategy..well I have about 30 positions. Average position size about 3% of total account value. TZOO...

Trying to make it on my own

For my core trading strategy, I have written and evaluated many rules over the past year. Only two has really withstood the test of time. One of them is: Trade what you know, and avoid marginal trades. My system is based largely on qualitative analysis, so it doesn't lend itself to hard ruels.

Trying to make it on my own

Holding a diversifed portfoilo of long term holdings does not constitue gambling.. The fact that a stock has the ability to go down 30% in one day on news, does not mean one should not hold any stocks overnight..such a silly implication that I'm not sure why I even bother defending it. I...

Trying to make it on my own

Wow what a day. Its a little embarassing that I make a call, say I am bullish, and the next day the stock goes down 30%+. On the bright side, my next call will almost definitely be better than a -30% return. Took a 10k hit in the long term strategy on this one..but had an incredible day in...

Definitely very weak results, showing I was pretty wrong on this one. I'm out.

Trying to make it on my own

I should have said that I am long. Been holding this one for about half a year now..not really betting on this earnings per se..but I do expect something positive. I know you're kidding, but maybe I should have picked a higher conviction trade to prove myself? haha I should just throw it...

Trying to make it on my own

Earnings actually continue at a decent volume except for about 3 weeks of every quarter. I trade most fundamental events that move stocks, including preanouncements, M&A, sell-side recommendations, etc. But the strategy is the best during busy season, such as now.

Trying to make it on my own

My core trading strategy is simlar to what neke does in that I make a directional bet on a stock after a fundamental event, which is often earnings. Thus the fundamental analysis. I don't know if there's any other similarties to our strategies beyond that, since I don't really know what type of...

Trying to make it on my own

I would say its 99% fundamental analysis. Trade duration is intraday, enter at the start of the day (or aftermarket the prior day), and exit at the end.
