inandlong, I understand you having to pay a fee to borrow stock to short. However, is there not also a "short stock rebate". Meaning, the proceeds received from selling the stock short could be earning interest?

Might 100 trillion USD be the notional value of the derivatives? I do not think it is the amount of counterpary credit risk. The actual value of the payments is much smaller, although I am not sure by how much.
