Paul Volcker: Economy may be deteriorating even faster than during Great Depression

Anyone read Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut? He presents in an amusing way a lot of my thoughts about jobs.

Paul Volcker: Economy may be deteriorating even faster than during Great Depression

About jobs - it has to be a part of the discussion that machines have replaced so many jobs. I don't even see with protectionism how there are really enough jobs to go around if you cut back to things that aren't entirely fluff in the economy. Maybe part of the answer needs to be spreading...

    Consumer spending

Consumer spending is a huge part of our economy and I keep reading about it again and again. I don't mean this to sound stupid, but what else would an economy be based on? If it's not your consumers spending, then it would be you making exports for another country's consumers, right? What...

    Printing $....simple answer please.

They can, read the Constitution. They just don't. They let the Fed do it. Japan is thinking about issuing a new form of money from their government, as well as keeping their central bank notes. Guess that's one way to inflate. I don't quite understand how it's much different than just...

Buy only the Dow Components with positive earnings?

It's pretty easy to classify them into those categories lately. The Dow is a dollar-based index, so the price of a stock determines how much it moves the underlying index. The leaders are the ones that can move a lot of dollars in a day.

    ES Journal Archive (2009 - 2010)

Watching BAC again, if it gets to $6.3, it should roll over pretty quickly after that, probably taking most of the financials with it.

    ES Journal Archive (2009 - 2010)

BAC has its antennas up pointing to 6.3, looks like the financial bloodletting will get a pause.

wave, seems like you've got the Japanese lunchtime trade worked out, or is it something more? Someone manipulates every night right as the Japanese trading is taking its lunch. Is it always about 10 points? I hadn't gotten that far in my investigation of it yet.

IMF Says Advanced Nations Already In Depression & Worst Is Yet To Come

I don't think it's safe to say. It's very hard to determine. The stock market bounced in Nov 1929 and then didn't see that low again until Oct 1930. It's really hard to know where you're at until you're looking back at it. The Nikkei is even more interesting to look at.

    Next week - brutal

What indicator are you using to look at this (huge supply)? All of the action for about a month and a half has just felt like traders against traders (and much manipulation). Go down some, collect some shorts, squeeze, rinse, repeat. At some point, some people who have a longer term...

Question about maintenance margin trading ES confused.

http://www.cme.com/trading/prd/equity/pricelimits.html Don't know why the PDF linked there wasn't updated on Jan 1, it's still the one from Oct 1. Oh well, I don't know where to look for a current one if it's not on the CME site. They are price limits. The actual futures aren't allowed...

Question about maintenance margin trading ES confused.

You just need to have enough for the liquidation value of your account to not go below the maintenance margin requirement. You'll have to figure out how many points you are willing to let it go. ES does lock limit after 5%, which they set every quarter I think, it was ~60 points the only time...

Why buy a home to lose money on it the next day? 19 million homes vacant.

I know this isn't exactly scientific, but I've found these polls very useful for keeping track of what's actually happening. We're already down more than 20% from last year on consumer spending judging from these polls, can't even imagine what it's down from the peak...

Question about maintenance margin trading ES confused.

You've got it, but you won't have a chance to put more money in. IB automatically liquidates.

    this market is headed lower

Look at XLE, energy has a much bigger weight than the financials at this point. It's looking like it has a little more down to go before bouncing (I like using an 11,2 Bollinger band to quickly judge stuff like that). Also, XLF proved in early December it doesn't always bounce after a strong...

    this market is headed lower

If anyone's interested, the price of all the Dow stocks added together as of the close today is 1004.53, so divide a component's stock price by that number and you can see what percentage of the Dow that stock currently is. XOM is about 7.6%
