Citigroup seeks "emergency cash" from U.S. Treasury

So, now we're back to the government is going to buy toxic assets, I thought last week they wouldn't. They can't figure it out, can they? I am getting tired of having to shuffle my money around because I'm fearful something or another will go under. I'm beginning to consider gold partly...

Is IBKR tanking because Citibank is going under?

Yes, and it's per person, so a joint account is covered up to $500k. So, that's for a bank, not for an IB account. SIPC still has the same limits as before, though, which is $100k on your cash in an investment account and from my understand it doesn't matter if it's an individual or a joint...

Is IBKR tanking because Citibank is going under?

tomahawk, what short&naked is referring to is if the CME starts handling CDSs as part of its clearinghouse, then IB and the members of the clearinghouse would be on the hook if a counterparty defaulted, and it seems this means futures accounts that are under IB are too. IB doesn't want the CME...

Is IBKR tanking because Citibank is going under?

Another interesting note from that link I posted is that futures accounts are not covered by either SIPC or Lloyd's (you all take a look at it, make sure I'm reading it right). It seems, though, that IB only keeps enough in a "futures" account to cover the margin for whatever futures...

Is IBKR tanking because Citibank is going under?

At IB, you're also protect under Lloyd's of London for up to $1 million of cash: http://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/accounts/accountProtection.php?ib_entity=llc

Is IBKR tanking because Citibank is going under?

ByLo, I looked it up and what I was reading was saying if it's reported as cash by the brokerage it's treated as cash by the SIPC. What I'm not clear on though is if it's being swept into a money market how it's handled. Also, I looked into it some more and it's *not* $100,000 per customer...

Is IBKR tanking because Citibank is going under?

I'm not particularly worried, but if you are worried and are comforted by SIPC, be aware the SIPC has limits for cash of up to $100,000 per customer. So, it's not a bad idea to spread your investing out a little especially if you have the tendency to end each day flat.

    How do you stop deflation?

Ilum, gold is a little bit of different kind of beast. Fear also makes it rise, as well as inflation concerns. So, when the market totally tanks to new multi-year lows, gold goes up. FWIW, it had been going down before that. Oil is good to look at to gauge inflation, pretty much most of...

    How do you stop deflation?

That would be true, except that the little guy will lose his job and has no savings for the most part in the US. There's the crux.

Neel Kashkari now "sexiest man alive"?

Hmmm, I don't find him sexy. If they want someone of Indian heritage, why not name Sendhil Ramamurthy?

Will Bush Close The Market Friday?

Citi's asking for a short ban again, I guess that would be a way to prop up the market for a day or so: http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/citi-lobbys-lawmakers-sec-reinstate/story.aspx?guid={4E2231B5-7A65-4723-A97E-509539240885}&dist=msr_5

What's it really like on Main St, USA now?

Really??? I don't go to malls, but my mom does sometimes and she went during her lunch the other day and said there were literally only 3 cars parked for people to be in the Dillard's, so a lot less busy than normal (we're in the Dallas area, this was the Firewheel mall). A lot of stores are...

    Hyperinflation vs electronic payments?

I never got the impression that bank interest rates actually kept up with the rate of hyperinflation. Read some of the stories here. People who just kept cash in banks during hyperinflation were nearly wiped out.

S&P will be under 700 within days

I believe you. There seems to be a total lack of buyers right now except for speculators, they can only hold it up for so long, besides I think most of the speculators are daytraders at this point. There needs to come a price where people are at least a little confident that this might be...

    Paper Trading to Real Trading-How?

The Nikkei mini (N225M) is pretty smooth I'm finding, fast, but smooth. It's 500 yen per tick, but a tick is 5 points in the underlying, so just 100 yen (about $1) per point in the underlying index.

    Trading Mistakes

Not taking a loss quick enough, not being patient enough before entering a trade Then there are also stupid fat finger mistakes I make occasionally, buying instead of selling for instance.

PLAN for the worst, Hope for the Best

Someone that knows more about history than me, please explain what the confiscation of gold was about economically. What I've read seems to indicate it gave a floor to the price of gold, which in turn gave a floor to the price of other commodities, starting up a round of inflation to get the...

Taking advantage of the USD devaluation

There's a yuan ETF: http://www.etfexpert.com/etf_expert/2008/05/currency-etfs-t.html Oanda offers a yuan pair, but you have to pay interest to be in the yuan, so that's a big drawback to me. I can't find anything at Everbank anymore that is denominated in yuans at all. I noticed a couple...

Wondering if anybody has a lazy man's way of getting the S&P max pain or SPY would be OK, too. Thanks.
