put a buy stop a little above the mkt & a sell stop a little below - so that you go with whichever way the mkt chooses

Kicking, "patterns ... becoming traps" - this certainly resonates with me. It's difficult to imagine that they simply stop happening though. What's more likely is that the mkt goes through cycles - some patterns work for a while then stop - then start again.
