These are all stocks from financial industry. When these collapse lots of other non-financial stock will follow. Strange that IB makes such a selection. Some companies in the list are very reliable and have nothing to do with current mini-crysis...

With US options which have become quite liquid nowadays, this is no problem anymore I guess. (at least for swing type of spreads, which you are also mentioning)

Slippage is more important (in terms of cost) than commission. Slippage on most stock is higher than on the (equivalent) futs, but SPY is an exeption.

Another solution would be to delta hedge your $ exposure with options. I'm sure there are exchanges (like CME or Eurex) where eur/$ options are liquid enough to do this without much costs.

One solution would be to find a cheap forex broker (maybe Oanda.com is an option?). Just deposit ~1000 euro and you can short the $ up to the amount you need.
