Don's openings and more for 2005

My power went out 10 seconds after the open. The good news is my UPS works and my T1 line didn't go down. But I only had 1 PC connected to it and so I was flying a bit blind. I cancelled my remaining orders and closed out everything ASAP rather than try and trade through the chaos. 4 fills...

Don's openings and more for 2005

6 fills/ +169 All losers or flat except for CSX. What a sweet fill on CSX. Too bad it was only 500 shrs. I imagine that's what all the fills were like "back in the day", right? :)

    Mark to market

Spend some time at http://www.greencompany.com/ to get a better idea about taxes. In particular check out their method for reporting gains. I did 1 line per acct on schedule D (before I went M2M) using their method. Otherwise I'd have thousands of pages. Regarding your expenses, they can be...

    Trading for a Low-Paying Living

One potential flaw I see in these numbers is they only count mark to market, ie. retail traders. Prop traders do not have to file a mark to mark declaration since they are in an LLC (I believe). FYI, I trade retail M2M, but file my own returns based on Green's tax guides. So I'm not...

I don't believe the method, as Don presents it, uses betas. He goes strictly by percentages and seems to do quite well.

Do You have other talents Besides trading?

Besides the usual blackjack and poker, I've been a kayaker for 13 years. I also mountain bike.

    Shld?

I think the "just one share" comment was in reference to people who can't get over the high dollar price of those stocks. ie. 1 share at $150 is the same as 10 shares at $15. Then again, if these people are too dumb to do basic math they shouldn't even own 1 share. This is why BRK.A has...

Don's openings and more for 2005

Must be contagious. My program crashed too, due to an error on my spreadsheet. Found and fixed the error about 20 seconds after open. My benchmarks show +$1700 for the day. I usually outperform my benchmarks. Sigh..... [insert sound of head banging on desk here]

I can't see how you could do it without the API. I built my original OO spreadsheet off of IB's sample spreadsheet for their DDE API. The sample spreadsheet will certainly take care of most of the order entry/IB specific mechanics for you. Then all you have to do is add all your fair value...

    What's better than cable?

I have had intermittent cable outages since December. Finally got disgusted enough to get a 1/2 T1. $250/month. Had a couple bugs at first but now it's rock solid. The best part? After the technician set it up he turns to me and says, "I ran a speed test, looks like it's running at the full T1...

You contradicted yourself here, no? The $1000 fee is good for a lifetime of free advanced classes, only open to Bright Traders. I took the basic class, paid the $1000, but I'm not a Bright Trader. Is the advanced class open to me?

It sounds like you already keep records of your trades. I do too. What I do is figure out an "target" exit time based on past performance. My thought process is, if everything is working I should be getting out "about" X time. And I try to make myself wait until then. I've found that lack of...

    CNBC - Cramer's Mad Money

I found the voiceover reference to CMGI's performance today most amusing. It's time to party like it's 1999! Now we know what Kudlow contributed to the old K&C show - a sense of decorum. I need to shut this crap off. I can't write code with that noise.

I didn't type it in until he showed the symbol. Maybe my cable TV is faster than your cable TV..... and I was in no hurry as I had no intention of playing. I see a new business opportunity. High speed CNBC provider....

You aren't very fast then. I saw 1.92 on the ask but didn't bother. Reminds me of online poker at the nickel table.

I hear you on the noise. I built a new PC last week. I used a CPU fan I had around, a Vantec. OMG, sounds like a hair dryer in there. Ordered an arctic cooling fan from quietpc.com. Came in today, can't wait to get it installed. I use Zalman case fans, they are very quiet.
