is it even possible to start a hedge fund these days?

Why don't you do some research and tell us how many hedge funds were started in 2011 and compare that to previous years? This information is available on the internet. Perhaps that would help you find an answer to your question.

    Asset raisers

One thing to keep in mind is that no matter how good your marketing guy is investors will want to meet the decision maker. This holds true especially for small, unknown managers. I know this from experience. So, you can expect to meet each new prospective client at least once. Take that into...

Calculating option strike by inputting delta.

Get the formula for delta and just rearrange to solve for strike given delta and all other inputs. A google search might get you the formula if you don't know enough math to do this yourself. However, I think you need something that calculates an inverse cdf, which I'm not sure you can do in...

Need Help Researching Portfolio with Gold in It

Try going to kitco for historical spot gold. If they don't have it just google a bit and you will find something that goes back as far as you need (I've been able to do this in the past).

The $1 Billion Armageddon Trade Placed Against the United States

"The trade was for block trades of 5,370 10-year Treasury futures executed at 124-03 and 3,100 Treasury bond futures executed at 125-01." "The number of shops or even central banks that can take on this level of market risk is extremely small. Some that come to mind are hedge fund manager...

    Synthetic Stocks

Perhaps you should specify what you mean by synthetic stock. Do you mean CFDs? Do you mean synthetic long/short using options?

Why are Interest rate futures traded in 1/32?

Some US markets still work on the English measurement system of fractions, as opposed to metric decimals. Cash Treasuries are quoted in fractions, so their futures follow suit. Stocks used to be quoted in fractions.

    Crazy skew in crude..

Agreed...your statement makes no sense. I see ATM vol for Apr calls at 46.5. 35D calls are around 49. ATM puts are 45.5, while 35D puts are around 44.2. Makes sense to me that OTM calls are more expensive than OTM puts for crude (for obvious reasons). The question you have to ask...

    Bloomberg terminal?

I don't do much OTC, but in order to generate $200k from the spread, assuming a 10bp spread on a particular product (which I would think is somewhat substantial), you would have to do a $200MM notional trade. I'm pretty sure no one will do that size with a fund that has $5MM AUM. Not trying to...

    Bloomberg terminal?

Yea, FCM coverage these days is pretty much one-dimensional order-taking. That level of commish is more than enough to keep you as a client there but, unfortunately, it's tiny for a Goldman or Morgan. Given that you won't benefit from any type of enhanced FCM coverage you might consider...

    Bloomberg terminal?

Bloomberg won't help you get enabled with counterparties, even if you are using one of their internal trading platforms (like FIT). Unfortunately, you have to do all the legwork to try and get accounts opened up with banks/brokers. Even if you, say, have a buddy at an IB that is willing to...
