    Using options for swing trades

I had the same reasoning last year, and tried using options instead of the underlying stock (outright long positions). It didn't work well for me (not to say that it can't be done). My signals came when volatility was high so the options were expensive. Time value decayed every day. The...

    IB Downtime

Just got two more executions. It seems that if the quotes on TWS are accurate, trades for that equity work. It looks like TWS just went back to normal (or maybe I should say started working).

    Horrible!

mdmbud, Can you explain the details of what happened? I don't mean to defend IB, but this is the third time you have been asked to explain the details of the problem, and you still haven't explained what actually happened. Your post would be much more meaningful and helpful to the rest of...

so you want to trade against me, huh?

I don't think trading equities is a zero sum game. As a stock appreciates, more than one participant can realize a profit without anyone suffering an actual loss. I suppose the warrior, combatant psyche works well for some people, but I am more comfortable with just trying to make profitable...

    how do YOU use margin?

If trader 1 buys $100,000 worth of stock each time, he will net $5,000. If trader 2 buys $400,000 worth of stock each time, he will net $20,000. There are lots of different ways to look at using margin, and money management is always very critical. Whenever position size is increased...

Which brokers have the best "buying power?"

Interactive Brokers does this as far as I can tell. I'm not familiar with their under $25,000 accounts, but I know if you have over 25,000 you get 4x buying power day and night, and buying power is updated every minute. Margin calls are executed automatically by their software if you exceed...

which is best the direct access broker

Where did you find the commission info? I read through what I could find, but couldn't find anything about commissions and fees. I also was unclear about their margin. Do they offer 4x day and night like IB? Thanks for your help.

    IB Downtime

My TWS was fine, but eSignal stumbled a little bit - didn't disconnect, but paused for about 10-15 seconds a couple of times (if TWS does that, I think it automatically disconnects). Good luck.

    Is the bottom in?

Why do you suppose it is that everyone speculates whether we have bottomed when we have a bear market, but no one really asks if "this is the top" when we have a bull market? One question seems just as logical as the other, but it seems much more time and energy is spent speculating about the...

Class Action Lawsuit against NYSE Specialists

Praetorian2, I don't understand nx real well. I trade MWD and MER almost everyday with TWS. I typically enter my positions 200 shares at a time. I typically enter limit orders to hit the bid or take out the offer, but the only time I get instant fills is when Timerhill fills me. In your...

    Finding The Right Trading Style

Back in '97, I tried scalping volatile big-cap nasdaq stocks 1000 shares at a time. I did this for several months without any confidence and closed my account with $500 less than I started with. I was never comfortable or confident. I kept watching the markets, and in June of 2001 I started...

    IB order rejected

I get the bulletins all the time, but I haven't had this problem yet. I wonder why it only effects some of us?? I only trade equities - could it have something to do with the type of account? I use almost exclusively limit orders, I wonder if the type of order matters? Good luck to those of...

Pre- and aftermarket charts - the life after Qcharts

Thanks Wild, now if I can just get good quotes on NYSE listed stocks when the market is closed, I'll have it made.

    nx button

It has been my experience that a specialist can do just about whatever he wants  . It may not be ethical or even legal, but if it is profitable he will do it. Market Makers used to be just as bad, but the ecn's gave us little guys a chance to force them to at least honor their quotes. I...

Pre- and aftermarket charts - the life after Qcharts

The charts aren't a real big deal to me, but they are helpful. I trade pairs, and a quick glance at a chart as I am passing the computer after hours can let me see if something is happening in one of my pairs. The real problem for me is the lack of good quotes to feed my spreadsheet that...
