    hedging trades with index ETFs

I can take historical daily data from Yahoo and run a regression on a stock's closing prices and the ETF -- the resulting coefficient of the dependent variable (the stock) is it's beta with respect to the ETF. This tells me what % of value I need in the etf in order to hedge. Now - How can...

    Bright trading and any thoughts

Maybe other firms are more corporate-like while Bright is more of a family thing and that makes it easier to have an active spokesperson. Also, the other firms might want to appear 'above the fray'. Being new to prop trading myself, it was hard for me to get a commission rate close to what...

    hedging trades with index ETFs

When I believe a stock's price will go up or down, whether based on some TA or other trade idea -- I get frustrated when the moves of the overall market are a much bigger factor in determining the stock's price than anything else. I sometimes feel I might as well be trading index futures rather...

    scalping with prop firms

<br><br>I'll share my hotkeys as well since you all have shared. I bought some custom buttons and re-wired them to send keystrokes. I find that this greatly increases my reaction time and that there is less fumbling than with a keyboard. No longer will I hit the wrong key and lose money...

    scalping with prop firms

.02 appreciated. At about what commission rate does scalping become impractical? I suppose it's different for everyone. I have the execution speed and have mapped out some useful hotkeys. As a noob, I think the rates I'm paying are likely too high given what I've read here. There are a...

    scalping with prop firms

So I have to admit that when I first heard about scalping I thought it was a very bad idea. After all, what goes on inside of a minute seems like noise. Now, it makes more sense to me after reading 'Markets in Profile' and getting a better idea of how different timeframes work. It also...

    Here's a Tip for passing series 7 / 55/ 63

I just passed yesterday. I used the 'Pass The 7' book and a cheap set of 250 practice test questions off of ebay. This was far from an exhaustive study plan but the practice questions were more difficult than the real test and made you think more about the material. I have some finance...

    Trader P/L 2008

I've often wondered if trading a "mini-portfolio" during the day with a maxLoss setting and profit target would be feasible. The different between 2-3 and 6-8 in terms of the volatility of the portfolio is big. One would think that 8 positions would have a significant smoothing effect. Of...

    prop "training" outlines

Thanks for posting that. I bet it's on your website somewhere but I hadn't seen it until now. Would be interested to see what other programs include.

    prop "training" outlines

While I gather that the most important factor for success at trading is finding your own style/strategy that works for you, I am interested in an outline of what the various prop firms who offer training actually teach. Bright teaches pairs and openings strategies, anything else? I assume...

    Prop Firms for Options Writers

I think there are some options strategies that are only feasible with a firm like VTrader, Cassandra, and others that I don't know of. Without these firms, relatively low-risk strategies would tie up too much capital.

    Trading Loss at Swifttrade?

I'm not complaining nor am I worried about anything. I'm just trying to get a feel for what deals are out there. I mentioned momentum as one of those vanilla strategies that has been shown to make money consistantly over a long term. I guess it's just partly curiosity and partly preparation...

    Trading Loss at Swifttrade?

Well the 95% VaR would mean that there's a 95% chance that losses would be limited to $5k. I guess that's a fairly risky example. VaR would be determined by a monte carlo simulation. Maybe 99% VaR of $5k would be a better example. There's still a 1% chance that losses would be more than $5k...

    Trading Loss at Swifttrade?

Related question: will firms like Assent, Echo, etc give some overnight leverage to folks who are doing serious portfolio analysis? For instance, if I carry a portfolio with a 95% VaR of $5k - could I carry a portfolio overnight of $100k using $10k? Seems like it would be extra work for...

    Optiver

They give the test at Top Universities - but I agree with you that it may be mostly to create a bit of a mystique about how brainy they all must be. The more people they test and fail the greater their notoriety.

    Backing up a computer

If you have a few gig of files that you want to back up and keep periodic backups of, I recommend using JungleDisk if you have a reasonably fast internet connection. I was going to use an external disk but I travel around a lot and I'm worried about losing it, theft, or if it fails - or just...

Last post about this damn test (I promise)

Are you for real? He had asked about where to sign up for the test.

Last post about this damn test (I promise)

I just submitted mine, too. They didn't give me the STC materials. I bought the 'Pass the 7' book. My understanding is that, after there's a background check, they will let me know and I can register for the test with Prometric.

    Opening Orders - 2008

Thank you - I just realized I had left that fixed in there as it's one of the areas I want to work on improving. Hopefully I can stop short of making it worse :D

    Opening Orders - 2008

Where does that Net Valuation number come from? Is that a homebrew calculation of the SPX based on closing prices? I'm not sure why the % increase comes from 11.7 / Spot rather than 11.7 / NV. Do you all set a max loss on these types of trades?
