    Taxable amount of a ShortSale

If you are long the stock, then you don't need any cash to cover a short call. The short call is covered by the stock. That is why there is no unsettled cash when you sell a call.

    Taxable amount of a ShortSale

Aren't you trading in a cash account? No margin? So the only way you could sell a call is if it is covered, either by a long call of a different strike/expiration (a spread), or a long stock position. If you are long the stock, then you don't need any cash to sell a call. If you are doing a...

    Taxable amount of a ShortSale

I'm not convinced they made an error. In this context, unsettled cash may not mean cash that you received from selling something. It may simply refer to cash that is on hold, and unavailable for withdrawal or trading, because it has to be there in case your short put is assigned. It's not cash...

    Taxable amount of a ShortSale

Unsettled cash, in this context, sounds like the cash that is "tied up" in your account, because you have to have that cash available to buy the stock if the short put is assigned. You referred to this as collateral. Unsettled cash is not used to determine the tax consequences of your trade.

    Taxable amount of a ShortSale

Dude... When did you open this transaction? And when did you close it? (i.e., your short put expired, was assigned, or you bought to close) Did you close the position in 2023 or 2024? Your broker's logs are meaningless for tax purposes. What matters is the data on the 1099 form, because that...

    Meditation routines: books and courses?

This site is an excellent resource for audio talks. It includes talks about meditation practices, and also some guided meditation recordings. It is based on Buddhist thought and practice, but much of it is secular in nature, and adapted to the Western practice of mindfulness. Some talks are...

    Options newbie question

There was no bid or ask because options do not trade premarket or after hours. The price you were looking at was probably the last sale recorded when the market closed. You cannot trade options outside of regular market hours. To answer your general question, yes, if you think the stock is...

    NextEra Engergy Mandatory Convertible Bonds

Symbol = NEE.PR.R I would love for someone to take a close look at this and tell me if I am getting this wrong. These are debentures (bonds) with a face value of $50, and they are currently trading at about $35. When you buy the bond, you also enter into a purchase contract in which you are...

    Unrealized capital gains!!!???

Some corporate bonds have a feature called a survivor's option, which is sometimes referred to colloquially as a death put. If the bond is held by an individual (not a business entity), and that person dies, the estate has the right to call the bond, and get immediate redemption at par value...

    Unrealized capital gains!!!???

The impact on equities markets might not be that significant. The ultra rich hold much of their wealth in assets that are not traded on the stock market, e.g., private equity and real estate. It might encourage the movement of more wealth into offshore trusts. Assuming as a thought experiment...

    Unrealized capital gains!!!???

Viatical settlements are a fascinating investment, from the perspective of the buyer. For the policyholder, it is a way to gain access to the death benefit while they are still alive. A viatical settlement is possible even with a pure term life insurance policy that has no cash value. This is...

    Unrealized capital gains!!!???

That sounds like a viatical settlement for someone who is terminally ill. That's very different from a policyholder taking a loan against their own life insurance policy.
