Trading for a living - how much to start with?

Those returns are what I am making with 'real' money, and have steadily been rising. I trade EURUSD, GBPUSD and FTSE100 (primarily), although I don't see why you would need this information. I know it comes down to maths, but it was a general question to see what others have done also.

How safe is it to be online without a firewall/antivirus

Thanks for the advice. I am currently running IE, because Firefox seems so unstable on this machine at the moment when using Java. I use AVG free edition, too. I only run it manually, but have it running in the background (not scanning). I would normally use Kerio firewall, but after...

Trading for a living - how much to start with?

Ok, this is to the traders who are making a 'real' living from their trading activities. How much did you first start off with at the beginning of your trading activity when you finally decided it was about time to you could "trade for a living"? Why do I ask such a subjective question...

How safe is it to be online without a firewall/antivirus

A question for the computer whiz kids: I use a Actiontec ADSL wireless router with built-in firewall and anti-virus software on all machines. This is the only protection I have protecting my network/computers. Is this sufficient to protect against online threats? P.S. I'm not one for...

    How volatile is Gold?

Diversify, diversify, diversify - so people keep telling me. It also gets boring following just the few markets.

    How volatile is Gold?

I've been trading EURUSD, GBPUSD and FTSE100, primarily. Currently averaging 5-10% return per month with low draw down and 1.5% risk per trade. Been looking at intra-day Gold, and it looks like I could catch some really good moves, but I am only able to look back 3-days intra-day on my...

    How volatile is Gold?

I am seriously considering day trading Gold, as it would seem my trading strategy would work just as effectively on this instrument as it does on the futures and currencies I trade at the moment. I have two question though: 1) How volatile is Gold during the day i.e. compared to GBPUSD or...

Anthony Robbins - Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)

I think people are blowing this way out of proportion. I believe NLP is just another tool that can be used for good or bad, in away. Obviously, if one becomes delusional with it and believe they are capable of doing anything with it, then that could lead to disaster for them. On the other...

    Setting the stage for Monday...

I had a vision the universe was going to implode on Monday, but just before it did, there was a complete collapse of the stock market. I'm not sure which caused the worst feeling

    strategy to trade future.

I agree, GCI is a poor broker, especially due to the slippage issue, that's why I have turned to spread betting now (rolling contracts). The broker I use provide the same spread as GCI (if not better on some pairs) and pretty much zero slippage at the moment.

What's the worst drawdown you can handle?

My max drawdown is 2% per trade and up to 12% per trading day. Saying that, I typically take a fair streak of loses waiting for the big moves, which seems to work for me at the moment.

    Economics of Renting vs. Owning

Does you numbers include that fact that as a tenant it is the landlords responibility to pay for any home repairs, whereas as a homeowner, you are responsible for paying for the repairs? I noticed that here is Europe, particularly France and Germany, over 60% of the population rent their...

    How many currency pairs?

My mistake. I was under the impression that day trading also covered traders who used intraday data. Yes, I have been profitable since December/January (started in November), so I still have a long way to go in developing and optimizing my trading skills.

    How many currency pairs?

I look for moves on a 5 min chart, confirmed by 1 day chart. I can hold a position for up to 3 days. I thought this was still classed as day trading. That certainly explains the different, anyway.

    How many currency pairs?

I was thinking about trading the USDJPY or the GBPJPY. What is the best time frame to trade these pairs? My strategy is really quite simple. I may have a position for 1-3 days. I follow the primary rule of trading (for me), "cut your losses short, let your winners run". So, I don't really...
