I'm considering one of these wireless device too to keep an eye on my trades while I'm away from the desktop. Is it a real PITA to trade through a handheld device? How's the system response, etc?

Why don't you just ask them to review your account and upgrade the trading level? If you meet their requirements, I don't see why they won't let you do the more risky strategies.
But for 2-3 months out, you can sell higher strike for the same or higher premium due to the extra time value. So you get more upside for the underlying...
Should you always sell 2-3 months out to get more time value premium or sell the nearest month expiration and keep renewing it every month if it expires worthless?
I would skip the Thomsett book. It's way too brief. Save your money and go straight to McMillan "Option as Strategic Investment" before making your first trade. Most of these books are available from your local library.
I'm looking at some ITM puts with delta close to -1. I want to short the underlying stock but don't want to expose myself to unlimited risk so I'm using the ITM put as short stock surrogate.
Some of the DITM options are very thinly traded say under 10 contracts per day. Should you avoid those even the underlying is actively traded like SPY, QQQQ?
