New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

I don't think so. Correlation is on a much longer time frame that HFT's trade. I suspect this has more to do with the relative volume increase of ETFs in the markets. I do think that the lower average VIX is a function of increasing HFT transactions however.

    maybe something related to mental

Two things come to mind. One is the tendency of the human mind to seek order for control over a world that is not controllable by it's nature. The other is that sometimes what money or success or something else people get from trading runs into other self-programs that see failure as a...

SEC to Congress: Nonsense, the markets are not rigged.

LOL. +1 Well I know I feel better now. Of course, the obvious question, had they turned out to be rigged, would have been: why was the SEC MIA for so long? Lucky they don't have to answer that question any more.

Just one flaw, what ever will the regulators do with their free time?

New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

A major reason for backtesting and forward testing IMO, is to promote the confidence of the trader. The system may or may not reflect reality, but if the trader thinks it reflects reality, then she/he is more confident to trade it under all conditions believing that the "system law of the...

Reaction to Michael Lewis's book and "60 Minutes" interview

I agree with this comment somewhat. The exchanges are also offenders by having provided special order types and access (if that is the case). Another issue is who owns the exchanges and the relationships to those HFTs. For example if an HFT owns a significant stake in an exchange that doesn't...

HFT? Forget about HFT, it's now..HIT.

Clearly it is not illegal to be first in line, trade or use skill to trade or compete. It should be illegal that someone else is given preferential orders, preferential information, or preferential treatment in a market place that is itself a infrastructure commodity. Brokers have been made...

Reaction to Michael Lewis's book and "60 Minutes" interview

To be understand better what you are saying: So the direct feeds are the network connection point/device you say where the exchange's duty to report (as per regs) ends. The exchange has no responsibility for the accuracy of the SIP at all locations as per this paper...

    [Poll] Is Corruption Fractal?

.... or is the government delivering on a "promise to deliver value". 10000 years of having leaders administering our grain (or what ever we value as a society) and distributing it equally and fairly has not worked out so well. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Great poll.

Reaction to Michael Lewis's book and "60 Minutes" interview

Good post. All of these things also reduce order sizes and average hold times which should have been a big clue to the SEC that something was wrong. If the SEC finds out that the tape time was being rewritten to look good for the regulators - isn't that something like destroying the complete and...

Reaction to Michael Lewis's book and "60 Minutes" interview

I am not sure of your argument, but number one IMO, the regulations were not followed when the feed tape time was changed. NBBO doesn't exist independent of time. Also, if the exchanges publish two tapes (one fast and one slow - one of which doesn't go to all market participants), also goes...

    Option Market Maker Questions

This is actually not true in markets though. Markets have 3 outcomes - move, countermove and chop.

Put a Pencil in Your Mouth...

The I who assumes, and the my who thinks, are different (says Jean Paul Sartre in answer to Descartes "I think therefore I am"). Have you ever considered the thoughts are not the observer?

I don't know much about Sila or Buddhism. I imagine that there must be many ways to go with no one method favored. I am told that while the Buddha practiced asceticism for a period, he didn't find enlightenment within those practices. Is that statement true? For me, these beliefs involve...

Put a Pencil in Your Mouth...

From my memory of the Power of Now (may be wrong): .... Enlightenment is the end of suffering is the simple definition of the Buddha. But what's left when there is no suffering. He is silent on that, implying that you will have to find out for yourself ..... The I is in the beholder, but beauty...

Put a Pencil in Your Mouth...

The power of now says that there is only fear or love and that shame is simply a type of fear. Some say that ego itself is simply a reflection of fear. It is great fun to hunt for reasons, emotions, beliefs, puzzles, thoughts etc. but it is more productive to just put those away and see what...
