    Example: Our "indicator" tells us that the crowd is over-optimistic about stocks. Then the S&P rallies 10%. Were they really "over"-optimistic if they were right about the market direction?

    You can always backtest it and take slippage into account in your calculations. Sounds like rubbish to me though. I bet the pattern doesn't hold for long and besides, as soon as you put in a stop loss you will see your earnings deteriorate.
