Easiest way to start coding an automated system

Not sure if this it what you're looking for, but this is what I use. Sort of semi-automatic. https://code.google.com/p/yahoo-finance-managed/wiki/enumQuoteProperty Though it says updated 2011, the codes still work today. I run Applescript on Mac Numbers, similar to Excel, and with a command, I...

The Big Short is coming out next week

Hope the movie is as good as the book. IMHO "the Big Short" is the best book Micheal Lewis has ever written.

I am curious. What do you guys do for a living?

I opened my first trading account in 2005 with $5000, and continued working full time, and saving something from every pay. On weekends I would read and study, everything from Graham’s Security Analysis to Ittelson’s Understanding Financial Statements and many many tomes in between. You can even...

How to calculate daily Implied Volatility?

Sometimes you can find a mis-pricing, as in getting a bargain or hosed, by checking the one day vol. I just recently switched over to synthetic long put, delta neutral, straddles for earnings play. In one day, out the next. Though it won't dictate whether it's a buy or pass, I'll check the one...

How to calculate daily Implied Volatility?

Great info. I used to use the 365 days, but for no explicable reason went to 252. It's like trying to fool yourself into thinking vol expectation is higher when in fact it is not.

I am curious. What do you guys do for a living?

I swing trade full time, just in my fourth year now. First two and half years were very good, the last six months, well, not so good. Moving ahead, I've made the adjustments and look foreword to an excellent fourth. Can't think of anything else I'd rather do.

What do you expect from 2016?

    • $20 oil, just like Goldman Sachs predicted. • oil man Dan Dicker to say "I didn't see it coming" again • extremely tight race for the whitehouse • Canada drops into a deep recession • very profitable year for me

    extrinsic value decrease

If you want to paper trade, go to the weekly options, source out an ATM long straddle that's liquid with a super tight spread, and of course, in your zone. Buy on the Thursday before (expiration week) 3:55 pm, and sell Friday, the next morning, before 10:30 am. There is a window, but wait too...

Finland considers a universal basic income for all citizens

Hey, where do I sign up? I'm living in Ontario (on the edge of bankruptcy), Canada and the gov here pays unions, millions of tax payers $'s, just to come to the bargaining table, and no receipt required. True. Mainstream media uncovers it, makes headlines, then forgotten two weeks later. And by...

Can someone please explain why this trade is going wrong?

Especially if your working the TMX, it's bid/ask spreads are brutal. Probably part of the reason the liquidity is so poor, b/a spreads are way, way too wide. Even on options that are transposed with the U.S. Best best is try and stick with major CDN banks and telecoms or anything with minimum...

    VRX: $150 in a 90 days?

Well, I do use an option calculator, in fact two. Since it appears my suggested trade is lacking something that has you taking a negative bent, please, present a detailed trade that is superior to the original post or show where the weakness is in mine. This request has no overtones, just keen...

    VRX: $150 in a 90 days?

You could go short, however, the reason for the long play is, the potential for profit is unlimited, and the possible loss is capped, and the original post is looking for a strong upward movement.

    VRX: $150 in a 90 days?

VRX options are very lightly traded in Canada, b/a spread, way too wide. U.S. looks more liquid, plus a lot tighter. Though vol at 74% is lower than historical 92%, in the last 6 months vol has touched in the high 20%'s. Vega could crush if going long. Maybe a synthetic long put straddle. buy...
