Trying to learn to program to design a strat, need advice

Reading thru these forums, it seems ninja trader is recommended as a tool for automated strategy design and backtesting. Therefore, I've set out to try to learn c#, but I have zero programing knowledge. I buy a book called "learning to program with c#" by Smiley, which was well reviewed on...

    execution trader

I worked at a hedge fund, granted as an analyst but dealt with the trader sometimes. Guess it depends on the nature of the order. Many of our orders had to be executed quickly, so we were often takers of liquidity, therefore we were always worse then vwap. Guess if you're just sitting there...

How to prevent brokers from knowing your strategy?

Good insights. Bet these are all tools utilized by the likes of Simons to protect his strat

    execution trader

Seems like simple stuff but it becomes challenging given the volume and complexity of trades. Many orders are conditional and executed based on certain formulas and price triggers. Many instruments are illiquid and difficult to trade without large slippage

    execution trader

Beating the vwap is pretty hard, and how much money they spend on execution is usually beyond their control. I would say number one thing is not messing up any orders. Number two would be always being available when the PM gives you an order and getting it executed quickly.

    2011: Rebuilding My Battered Account

Congratz on the good week. Have you ever estimated what kind of slippage you incur when you trade like this? WMS was a pretty big position in a fairly illiquid aftermarket.

    zipcar ipo...Never had profits!!!!

I checked out the prospectus quickly and it looks like they have some section in the footnotes that discloses what 'mature market' revenue and pretax income contribution is. Based on this, it looks like mature markets are at a 25mm pretax income runrate. New markets are losing money which is...

    zipcar ipo...Never had profits!!!!

I use Zipcar and I know a lot of others that use Zipcar. There are a lot of places public transportation doesn't go, or is just too inconvenient. Zipcar is good if you need a car for a few hours. Its not really cheaper than renting if you need a car for more than 8 hours, but is still more...

Why do more than 90% of traders lose?

I feel like its more likely the brokers will to reverse enginneer the strategies of profitable quant firms rather than retail traders. Clearly the quant shops already have something worth stealing

Take the speculators out of the oil market and oil will drop 50%!!!

Yeah, and forget about the fact that most most oil production in the world needs oil to be around 70 to breakeven on the capital costs of the wells, and that prices are set at the highest cost producers. Oil prices will continue to go up at 6 to 8% a year over the long run, well in excess of...

My account value reaches $600,000 for the first time; launching incubator hedge fund

Lazar, Are there any other set up costs for the incubator fund other than the 2k that you mentioned? How much do you think the annual or quarterly audit costs be? I am also considering starting an incubator fund maybe next year if my current performance holds up.

25 Richest Hedge Fund Managers Made $22 Billion Last Year

While I won't defend the performance of the HF industry as a whole. You need to realize that both the S&P and Nasdaq's performance is only comparable to an investor who is 100% long the market. Hedge funds, are on average, are less than 100% long the market (hense the word 'hedge') Too...

25 Richest Hedge Fund Managers Made $22 Billion Last Year

I sense thinly veiled jealousy in this thread. The top funds have long waitlists of investors. For instance, Renissance's Medallian fund charges a whopping 5/50 fee, but has managed consistent 30+% annual returns net of fees year after year. It is no surprise this fund is closed to new...

How much has been enough for you?

Although I am trading professionally for a living now, I strongly recommend against following this path. The odds are stacked against you. If you must, I recommend you fullffill the following criteria before becoming a full time trader. 1. test your strategy out extensively using at least 6...

    did I get screwed?

Thanks for some of the responses here. I know very little of the mechanics behind trade execution but here's what I'm sensing right now: 1. I doubt ameritrade will intentially display fake bids, front run their clients, or intentially show false quotes. They make enough money running a legit...
