Are lower 60/40 tax rates on futures in jeopardy of repeal?

In zero sum game of futures, all the winners' gains are offset by the losers' losses. Winners are taxed and losers are limited to $3,000 deduction per year, which will probably take a lifetime to use up. Even though all winners' gains are offset by losers' losses, i.e. zero net capital gain...

Shortie's Solution to the Unemployment Problem: Create More Restaurants

Already excess # of restaurants, which overexpanded relative to GDP for years. Dining out trends reverse on higher unemployment and higher food prices. Ditto for retail.

    $172 million loss

I surmise that Gary was whipsawed badly by the choppy Bond market of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ditto for Jesse Livermore from late 1929 to 1932 bottom. Massive whipsaws without historical precedent. Yes, market can behave in ways not seen in historical data sets.

    $172 million loss

Former market wizard Gary Bielfeldt lost most of his trading gains he made over his lifetime in the late 1980s. This story shows it can happen even to the best of them. http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2003/1027/108.html One Hand Giveth ..._ Tomas Kellner Robert Lenzner,_10.27.03_ Too many...

    50+, what to do next?

Just be careful you get into the right franchise. There are many sharks out there in the franchise world. Lots of franchise sales people out there to make a commission off of you from the franchise fee. Do your due diligence. Btw, 5 years ago a quiznos franchisee committed suicide. For the...

What realistic annual % return you expect?

What realistic annual % return you expect? What kind of annual max drawdown you willing to take to accept that return? How much you willing to risk on a particular trade? The above are ideal situations, but in reality a risk can run further if you tolerate a losing position longer than you...

Another record in people receiving food stamps

Somewhere around 50% of S&P 500 earnings are from outside the US. So, poor economic conditions here have only a partial impact on earnings, resulting in the disconnect between a poor US economy and a rising US stock market. Same for FTSE index in the UK. Small business that relies 100% on US...

Anyone else notice the relative weakness in Goldman stock?

Yes, something to be aware of, but for now the betadogs are in control. I don't believe SPX can take out 1290 resistance, and QE 2 is ending this Thursday. I think it's a trip back down to test 1260 for another, weaker dead cat bounce.

My 14 year rollercoaster trading futures

Way back in 1995, I was still a naive kid in high school. I received a booklet in the mail from quasi snake oil salesman Ken Roberts about TWMPMM book. This sparked my initial interest in commodities. Read a lot of other books since... Market Wizards, Trader Vic, Alexander Elder, Jesse...

    Trading "Secrets"

If you read Market Wizards, you know that Paul Tudor Jones and Bruce Kovner had trained a number of traders. Kovner says only 4 or 5 out of the 30 turned out to be good. That's a 15% success rate. You can be sure their hiring standards are rigorous, as they can pick the cream of the crop. So...

How bad is the slippage at IB?

If one is in a hurry to get out or get in, yeah, it would be market executions. Anything worse than the bid/ask I see on my screen for market orders would be slippage.

I'm going to try IB out. If the slippage is bad, then really it's not worth the low commissions.
