Has anyone tried this option strategy?...

I'm sorry, I got confused. I was under the impression that this site was a forum for the candid sharing of information so that others can gain from one's experiences. Obviously, I was misguided. For anyone who is interested in pursuing this delightful strategy that guarantees easy...

TOOLS FOR THE NEWBIE, what tools should I use?

If you're going to begin by swing trading 3500 shares on margin, probably the best tool to buy is a shovel. Because you'll want to dig a deep hole to crawl into after you lose your capital. Best to start by trading 200 shares. Nail that consistently for a couple months, then slowly begin to...

Has anyone tried this option strategy?...

Ah yes, covered calls. Another brilliant strategy in which one buys the underlying and caps all hope of participating in a rally of the stock. However, there is an advantage in this over naked puts, in that an unsophisticated trader has less risk of over-leveraging, as the account must...

Has anyone tried this option strategy?...

I agree with you...this is the only situation in which selling a put even begins to make any sense, but even this has problems if bad news comes out and you are forced to take the stock or roll out for a loss. Whereas, if you had simply waited to buy the stock you may now have a nice opportunity.

Has anyone tried this option strategy?...

My comments are not at all speculation...they are firmly based in reality...and I regret you feel that I am "spouting". After 30 years of investing and trading, if I could share a single piece of wisdom with anyone it is this: naked options are a strategy with little potential gain and...

Has anyone tried this option strategy?...

See the most recent posts under OPTIONS - Trend following system w/ Option writes Trade naked puts on a regular basis and you will have a very short career. You take on nearly all the risk of the underlying stock, and give up nearly all the upside if the stock rallies. Looks good on...

Thanks for the explanation of your trade, and for clearly illustrating my point that in almost every case, a trader who has an expectation that a stock will continue strong will be better off buying the underlying, a future, or even a long option. On 5/27 when you opened your short put, BSX...

There is nothing substantially new, but if you like his first book and identify with his approach, then Trading Room is worthwhile.

    swing trading vs day trading

Trading for a Living. A good investment for your library. Don't buy the workbook. It was put out by the publisher to capitalize on his first book. Elder's approach and use of indicators is common sense. Buy good stocks on pullbacks in an overall uptrend, because even great stocks...

    swing trading vs day trading

Wrong. A day trade is a swing trade cut short by an anxious trader.

There are certainly people who make money selling premium. But they aren't regularly doing it by selling naked puts, or they will have a very short career. And I don't agree that going long stock or short the put is the same "idea" at all. It's not the same idea, it's not the same...

No they are not the same at all. The very BIG difference is that if your underlying rallies and you are holding the stock, you participate in the full move. If you are short the put your only gain is the premium. And I can tell you that few things are more frustrating than watching the...

    swing trading vs day trading

It really depends on your personality and your trading methods. They are, in many ways, two different worlds. There is no one right or wrong here. However, from my personal experience you would do well to take a lot of Elder's writing to heart, as a similar approach has worked very well...

    Trading LEAPS?

Curious if anyone is trading LEAPs as a short term vehicle. I swing trade and look for 4-5% profit in a few days. In my few experiences using LEAPS as a stock substitute, I have profited nicely. In my admittedly short LEAPS career, I've noticed what seem to be a few advantages. 1...

    Correlation...

I agree. Trading decisions that are at all impacted by a "competitve" nature are more likely to be wrong than right. Competition is the last thing that should be on a trader's mind.

    The Stochastic Indicator

Jack proposes buying the move above a high stochastic level. But I don't trade trends, I trade counter to trends. So I am curious if anyone following this thread would like to take a challenge and have a little fun. If you have Jack's indicators and the appropriate data already loaded...

However, I can't conceive of any circumstance where sellings puts is a good strategy, with the single exception of a case where someone actually wanted the stock and was collecting the premium prior to being put the stock. And even then circumstances can quickly change in the market or the...

If you are speaking here of doing uncovered writes, I have three words of advice: Don't. Ever. Never. For any trader who can reliably predict the movement of a stock, there are a hell of a lot better ways to profit than short options. I speak from the voice of experience. You can...

FNM, FRE LEAP put options? Hmmm....

Well, I took the opposite position and went long a Jan 05 call. I'm up 30% so far. But that's what makes a market! As for a put, I'd be very nervous if investigations don't turn up anything deep at FRE. And I suspect they won't. This company has too many supporters to let it fail. The...
