Its because we are all married with families ... we already got the girl. <g> Actually the $soft people always had the best parties ....

Is anybody going to Upgrade to Longhorn windows

Its not a processor emulator, its an API emulator, which is the context in which I was using the term since the name implies its not a processor set emulator. Test Wine with a few windows applications - it is clearly not as fast as running the applications on Windows. Duplicating native...

Is anybody going to Upgrade to Longhorn windows

They cant. Even in the US you are free to write an emulator if it is done under the correct conditions. Wine works for many $soft apps but not all, and its an emulator which is just not going to be as fast as native code..... I tend to stay away from emulators except for things that really...

    I feel like a traitor.

Spend as much time worrying about this as you think the firm will spend worrying about you after you leave ....... My guess is zero.. but if you are in the position of actually working for some decent people who care about your career development then - very much NOT the norm - you should try...

Is anybody going to Upgrade to Longhorn windows

Exactly. The OS platform is really irrelevant. You use the one that mtches your application needs. In our case our platforms are offered on linux and we have the expertise to engineer the software in either environment: Linux or Windows. Since in our case we have a choice, we chose the lower...

Is anybody going to Upgrade to Longhorn windows

I really dont care which platform I use: I really only care about how productive the platform is for our business and the TCO. Fees are zero and administration is much much lower according to our calculations: its just our analysis which we trust and every $ vendor will claim otherwise...

    Using VB.NET with API example

There sure seem to be a lot of experts here ... and it all sounds so easy to get a tested working app that someone should be able to just code it up and post it ...... VB.Net is supposed to be a rapid prototyping and rapid app development environment .... lets see if one of the experts here...

    Career question

Software support jobs everywhere are waiting to be outsourced. It is good that you are formulating a plan to get out of that line of work - the sooner the better. On the second point you have nailed the corporate life: You need to understand human behaviour and deal with it on a daily basis...

    Using VB.NET with API example

    Career question

When you say IT I assume you dont mean software design because that is still in demand for the top people with non-commodity skillsets and will yield something in the range of 100 - 150 K and will allow you to be assertive and work your a** off. If you are just an IT lackey then your job...

WSJ Front Page Squawk Box Article

...todays WSJ story illustrates the hazards of the business ... the main hazard IMHO being the character of many of the people. A good lesson as to what can happen if you hire people that you have not checked out ...or if you just dont care who you hire .....

We Need A Linux Distro For Trading

... What i did say is that the TCO of one of them is much lower. Until you actually look and see what is out there in the open-source world you will forever be bound to repeating the mantra fed to you by marketing people at large software companies. Like Balmler said a few years ago when he...

Is anybody going to Upgrade to Longhorn windows

We dumped $soft in favor of Linux. So are we upgrading to "Longhorn" or whatever they are calling their next delayed amd overpriced system ? The answer is no. Do we care when they release it ? No. Would we pay for it ? No.

We Need A Linux Distro For Trading

Yeah, its always easier to bail then to actually measure the costs and other valid metrics to determine the actual cost of ownership. We are pretty happy with our cost structure and perfomance numbers under linux. Of course some people just like paying extra to outside vendors. I prefer to...
