    Any traders in Nashville, TN?

My knowledge of Nashville is a bit dated but I did live there 13 years. Houses are 100-300k or so. Single folks tend to live in the city. Family types and single cheapskates live in the suburbs. You'll need a car, even if you live in the city. Cost of living is much less than Chicago.

Fighting the HFT algos... daytraders and floor traders vs. HFT traders

And loading the quote feed with superfluous quotes so that the NBBO will be hopelessly slow.

Flying first class and not coach, why?

You should also know that almost nobody pays for full-fare first. Many companies get a percentage discount off of full-fare if they have a large travel budget and spend most of it on one airline. This is why they can't lower the list price easily because all the discounts key off of it. There...

You can do stat arb on them if they are cointegrated.

How to get 100s of trading books from the net

Most of them are garbage. A few gems though.

    Selling Bond Coupons

I would think the private banking departments of Goldman, Morgan, etc. could structure a deal for you. If I might ask though, why not just sell or borrow against the bonds if you need cash now?

    Apple iPad

Bought a 3G iPad today. I'll keep the forum posted on how I like it. It is going to be a laptop and Kindle replacement for me.

The new rent-free: No mortgage payments, no worries

At some point the lenders are going to catch up on the backlog and go after deficiency judgements against the best cases. They should approach it like the IRS and pick a few high-profile cases and throw the book at them. The poster boy for this would be someone with good credit and substantial...

Interactive Brokers would not allow me to exercise

There's an academic paper somewhere that says that the strike prices act as magnets on expiration due to delta hedging by market participants.

Grinding it out, day after day

I can see where you might want to keep your level of market risk constant. Say you're running a strategy where you want to buy all the x year new highs in the Russell 3000. You could own thousands of stocks at one point, but you still want to be market-neutral. And it changes day to day as the...

    GLD vs PHYS

There is some tracking error between GLD and spot gold since the etf uses derivatives to create the exposure.

    Is this strategy possible?

With volatility high right now you might think about selling the strangle rather than buying it.

Trading in the US for 3 months on a B2 visa?

Don't take this for legal advice, but as long as your account is registered at your permanent residence, this is no different than if I, a US citizen, traded my account at IB while on vacation in France. Capital gains aren't earned income, as far as I know. So you aren't really "working."...

Tradeworx' defense of their HFT strategies

The issue I have with this (making comparisons to the old exchange model) is that the HFT guys get the rights of exchange membership such as the first look at the book, without the obligation of having to post a 2 sided market all the time. Historically, when we've collectively allowed someone...

High frequency traders literally printing money!!! LITERALLY PRINTING MONEY!!!!

I got the impression that the front-running comes from the fact that the inter-market route outs have higher latency than the HFT guys.

SEC sets unified stock-halt rule for drops of 10%

My instinct is that 10% is too small a range for it to kick in. Lots of stocks have that kind of volatility.

    Visa and MasterCard on sale

Those stocks are knocked down due to the risk of legislation allowing merchants to charge different prices for payment via credit card. If enacted, it will have a huge impact on their transaction processing volume.

Tradeworx' defense of their HFT strategies

I think they should just delay the quotes at the data center to the point that everyone gets them at the same time. Use an average of the retail quote systems latency as a benchmark. Oh, and everyone agree on the minimum tick for all instruments and make it the same for all participants.
