Talk me out of a Mac

You'll definitely need vmware for pc apps. Some stuff, like TWS to Excel DDE, just doesn't work at all on the Mac version of Excel.

    Wanted: UPS 208V 3P 10kW

10KW? That's a lot, even for 3 minutes. Most of the big computer UPSs are 1 or 1.5 KW.

IB Sold Shares in my IRA for Fees - Stock Ripping up -

Wow. Hope the "monitor your accounts daily/weekly" lesson didn't cost you too much in absolute terms. And for the record, IB is not the right broker for you if you're going to put 100% of your equity into a penny stock and ignore it for months. If you have your heart set on holding...

synthetic USD borrow using EFPs at IB

They have a demo version of TWS where you can test various PM scenarios. Or if you have your own, just put in on in small size and see for yourself. I'm interested to know, so please report back.

Will AAPL Be the First Tirllion Dollar Company?

There was an accounting change that affects Apple's earnings. They are allowed to book future revenue from sale of apps or hardware upgrades immediately upon sale of an iPhone rather than booking it as each piece of the revenue comes in. This has the effect of overstating their current earnings.

synthetic USD borrow using EFPs at IB

Would probably work in a portfolio margin account. Try it in their simulator and see. It's not explicitly listed whether SSF's vs. stock get margin relief. You're not going to get to draw out 100% of the proceeds in any event. For Reg T, I'm reading it as 50% margin on the short stock, and...

IB Security Device lost by USPS - cost me $40

Guys, certified mail is for one thing, proof of mailing, usually for legal matters. It doesn't provide any special features and travels just like regular first class mail. It's really rare for USPS to lose something. It may eventually turn up at IB someday and you'll get your $40 back. I...

    Hedging your home...

See Robert Schiller's many writings on this. Short version, there's not anything liquid that is anything close to a perfect hedge for residential real estate.

It would appear that your beef is with USPS not IB.

IB TWS Phone Apps - where do they stand?

I use the iPhone and iPad apps. The iPhone app has some features the iPad doesn't. They are fine for what they are. You don't get the full set of order types as in TWS. Both are intended to supplement TWS for quotes and simple order entry, not to replace it. The iPhone app times out after...

The Trader column in this week's Barron's

It's already an alarming percentage of the Nasdaq 100. If it goes up much more relative to it's peers they will have to rebalance.

Best place to purchase historical stock data for backtesting??

Surprised no one has posted a giant torrent of the expensive stuff. Of course, having to pay for good data serves to keep out competitors.

    The APPLE Crash

+1 to that. None of the Excel broker integration seems to work on the native Mac versions. No DDE, and up until Office 2011 for Mac, no VBA either. Easier to just run Windows on VMware.

    The APPLE Crash

All of this you mention is true, but their iron fist also makes it possible for their products to be bulletproof for users who aren't tech-savvy. And their monopoly-like hold over their hardware, user interface and application ecosystem are reasons to buy the stock, not sell it. Mobile...

    Prop firms with overnight leverage

You're going to have to negotiate this based on your book and experience. No firm is going to post a menu offering good commission rates and high overnight leverage that anyone walking in the door can have. Doesn't anyone on ET know how to use a telephone anymore?
