I think that is a common element in the beginning...You still have a very open mind, your open to any and all "advice", etc...You still have a few hundred books that have yet to be read...you have a bunch of charts that have yet to be studied...Eventually, though, you run out of books to read...

Personally, I feel the high VIX is more the result of seasonality than anything else...Higher implied volatilities going into rest of September and October mainly because majority of time u will see increasing volatility in those months...

Its actually a pretty multi-faceted question you pose...A synthetic position, obviously can be done "split strike" with any number of combinations...But you should probably evaluate the strikes, the volatility, the time to expiration, etc, etc...Also different options classes have different...

Even though I am not a "system" trader, per se, I have a few ideas that could perhaps enhance the basic premise set forth...Instead of keying all of the trades off of the 5 min chart, why not use the 5min chart as the "execution" time frame, once a larger time frame has triggered... I say...
