Breakout Trading - Smart Play or Fool's Game?

IMO I would say these are perfect examples of a fool's game. Triangles and wedges are prime fakeout/smackdown territory these days due to their sheer obviousness and the fact that they'll just be used to collect more liquidity before the real move happens. I tend to use footprint charts for...

If you were using a 2000 tick chart, what are you using now that CME bundles trades

If a tick can represent a variable volume size, how is that *better* than a volume chart which represents volume? My recommendation is to suck it up and reorient your setups around volume charts. I mean honestly, how different can it really be? If anything I'd expect more accurate behavior...

UK trader arrested for May 2010 U.S. Stock market flash crash

You're making the false assumption that had he never complained he'd still be spoofing the markets now. It's the making money part that did him in, not the complaining.

Trading & the Zero Sum Game Debate

Yeah I'm pretty surprised to see this entire discussion go on with multiple points about the equities markets not being zero sum because it "creates wealth" while completely ignoring inflation and money supply. The original poster had it right in the first post.

UK trader arrested for May 2010 U.S. Stock market flash crash

What if I told you it's possible to compartmentalize how you feel about a situation vs how you participate in a situation? Would your head explode? He definitely should have stopped spoofing when the first amount of attention came his way but he should have never stopped complaining.

Institutional Corruption is America’s Main Problem

It also requires congressional and high court term limits and the government practicing what it preaches against internal wrongdoers. I don't disagree though with your deeper point that we're all headed back to the jungle in some form or fashion as we instinctually seem to live by that code for...

Interesting here how ICE might have been ahead of the game in being said clearinghouse.

A good trader must be also good in game theory and conspiracy theory!

I don't know about conspiracy theory but there are most definitely strong concepts of game theory at work. For every failed breakout and whipsaw you see there was a reason for it that wasn't necessarily about "well the price was sinply not fair value." There's fair value and then there's "fair"...

Stop loss dilemma -- to use SL or not to use SL, it's a problem

BTW one important thing to remember about being stopped out is that it doesn't mean that one is just done and they lost and that's it. It means they stopped the bleeding from getting worse. If a reversal happens there's absolutely nothing preventing reentry at that point that not only...

    talking about liquidity

Not in the long term but in the short term they definitely contribute to it. When you see the "other side" of the book ask yourself how much of that liquidity is real and how much can be yanked on a dime. Highly liquid markets help protect against this obviously but size is also relative. It's...

    Laptop Recommendation?

Macbook Pro Retina 15". Best laptop I've ever owned/used. I run VMWare fusion w/ Windows 8 and just ctrl-left|right to flip between OSX and Windows (Fusion, when running full screen, just occupies another desktop space). I see zero reason to own a native Windows-based laptop. I get non-trading...

The closest thing to the holy grail is.....

I agree with the sentiment in that it is a form of gambling but I think it's important to not *embrace* it as gambling. IMO, the more one can make it less about gambling, the better. There are obviously strong cross-overs, but I don't believe this is a game purely about probability. I'm not...

Bear or bull on oil market?

Because those ETF/Ns are based on the futures as their underlying? No point trading through obfuscated retail instruments when you can just trade the underlying.

Stop loss dilemma -- to use SL or not to use SL, it's a problem

I always use a stop loss. IMO it's important to forsee the whipsaws and adjust risk accordingly. I even try to anticipate and enter on them sometimes putting part of the position on before hand (so I'm in), and adding to the position when the "liquidity collection" phase is happening.

Breakout Trading - Smart Play or Fool's Game?

There's no way in hell i'd ever trade with buy or sell stops waiting for a breakout these days. There are just way too many retraces, fake outs, and other "liquidity gathering" exercises that go on for it to even be viable in my eyes. I'd much prefer to get in at a top or bottom, stop hunt, or...

Unacceptable Limit Stock Order Handling by IB

C'mon man that is not what smart routing is. They are only supposed to hold orders on their servers that cannot be NATIVELY expressed on the exchange. Sig provided a perfect example of the underlying issue here and you need to accept the possibility that there is more than meets the eye here...

Tim Sykes the wolf of instagram!

While I don't fully believe it applies to Tim entirely, it's funny how money corrupts some people to the soul. It's not about how much damn money you have or whatever other douchey popularity contest / race you like to have in your spare time. Develop your own substance and be a useful human...
