If you want to sell commodity options one particular day every week

Loosely related to the above -- It used to be that Mondays were the days when the grain markets would lock limit up or down with regular frequency during the growing season. That rarely happens anymore, even with much tighter US and global stocks, because 1) the market can trade on Sunday...

Whaddya know - it looks like Traders Press had been acquired by Peregrine Financial (PFG) sometime before PFG went bust. Probably a vanity purchase made with client funds. http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/private/snapshot.asp?privcapId=117520872 FWIW, www.traderspress.com...

My 2013 Option Trades.... part 3

Maestro - Here's one to run through your magic analysis machine: Titan Wheel International (TWI), not to be confused with Titan Equipment (TITN) which we've both sold puts on in the past. TWI is a falling knife today because of an earnings miss. I sold the Jan 2013 $15 or $17.5 puts back in...

GCM13 - Help with New Trader

P.S. If you are in the exchange-traded contracts, start your education process at the exchange's site. I still think the best advice is to get out, but if you don't, then reduce your position size to one put or call at each of the strikes you're already in. Watch and learn how things unfold over...

GCM13 - Help with New Trader

I will echo the advice to get out now. Whether the firm is a legitimate broker offering regulated, exchange-traded products or they're selling some kind of derivative on exchange-traded products to fatten the spread and their commissions, doesn't really matter. What matters is getting your...

Option model that will batch process trades?

RPEX, Yes, one of the models I've used and seems be sufficient for my purposes is the Black model. This is after-the-trade analysis so it doesn't need to be super precise. If the IV or the greeks are off by a percent or so, that's good enough. I'm just trying to get the dbase complete and then...

Option model that will batch process trades?

My rusty knowledge of the models and how to write the formulas is what's stopping me. I know Excel has some built-in option pricing formulas and there are a number of worksheets on the internet, but from what I've seen, they were designed for European style stock options and it would take some...

Option model that will batch process trades?

Hi, I'm adding some pre-2011 option trades to a database and have all the option model inputs in Excel and Access. I'm not sure if "flat file" is the correct term, but the data for each trade is in a single row or record. I'm trying to find a way to efficiently run these trades through an...

My 2013 Option Trades.... part 3

PM, the puts you just sold are on a company in my neck of the woods -- the Northern Oil & Gas (NOG) office overlooks Lake Minnetonka in Wayzata, MN. It's ironic. An O&G company with a HQ in one of the few states in the nation with zero hydrocarbons. Kind of like Heckmann Water (frac water)...

    Pictures of your trading stations

Twenty three screens and associated hardware must have busted the housewares budget because it looks like the ice tea is consumed from a former spaghetti sauce jar. :D

T-3. What the hell is going on there?

If you go to the firm's website, there is a photo of five guys on the executive team, but only four names below the photo. The links to these four guys (usually to a profile) are inactive. http://www.t3trading.com/ Maybe the fraudster has been sh*t-canned already.

My 2013 Option Trades.... part 3

Atticus, el Maestro - Yes, 'sweet spot' as I used it was subjective. I realize that an option with 15-30 days to expiration is decaying more rapidly than an option with 45-60 days to expiration. My sweet spot (parameter or hurdle are better descriptors) begins at 60-70 days. As Forrest...

what are some interesting/counterintuitive things you have learned trading options?

Thanks, PM. Your comment that brought net worth (presumably liquid net worth) into a leverage discussion was interesting. Just curious to see how you measured it in a hypothetical account. Caveman - sorry if I've (re-)opened a can of worms.

Ya' gotta check out the website. http://www.stocktrading.com/ Where else in the year 2013 are you going to see one of those animated (spinning) gifs that draw your attention to something NEW? Maybe it's like fashion and circa 1990s websites will be hot again (can't wait for the shooting...

what are some interesting/counterintuitive things you have learned trading options?

Put Master, I know you and some other posters went back and forth in Aug and Sept (and perhaps before, and since) over the whole leveraged credit spread thing. I'm curious how you define your leverage? Is it the amount of margin required to carry your short naked puts divided by the...

My 2013 Option Trades.... part 3

Just giving you a hard time. :) At a glance, it looks like a good set-up: -well OTM, -in the sweet spot for theta decay, -ATM option IV is about 67% (down from 90% at year-end), so you're being compensated for the company and sector risk -looks like your strike hasn't been breached...

    2012 taxes from daytrading....shaking here

First, the IRS will only allow refunds if you are filing/amending within three years of the original filing date. They may have a similar requirement for filing/amending returns when the taxpayer wants to record a loss and begin to carry it forward. I think you need to check into the latter...
