    $ Silver $

I know this thread has been talking silver, but if you're looking to actually own the physical, not paper, I'd assume you'd also be looking at gold as well. If so, have you looked into BullionVault? It's a pretty interesting concept and the overhead costs of ownership they offer seems pretty...

    How do you stop deflation?

I agree that gold is too finicky to rely on, but right after an oil shock has it's own set of problems since it takes time for the demand destruction it leaves behind to play out. IMHO, shadowstats CPI feels right even if it isn't perfect. http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data

    How do you stop deflation?

Either you need to start proof-reading what you write, or you need stronger meds. (I'm leaning towards the later...) Here's what you posted: "When prices stay artificially high, consumption and investment is held back. Shit is too expensive relative to income. IOW, the debt-to-income or...

S&P will be under 700 within days

    Sorry, you're the one that's confused, 10^9 is not equal to 2^30. 1 GB of ram = 1024^3 = (2^10)^3 = 2^(10*3) = 2^30 1 GB of disk = 1000^3 = (10^3)^3 = 10^(3*3) = 10^9 Next time, RTFA...

Disk capacity (on the drive) is based on power of 10 even if your OS is reporting it in power of 2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive#Capacity_measurements

Computerspeak isn't scientific, it's geek... :p Check the notation used in the origin and derivation columns: http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html Even better... http://www.instantfundas.com/2007/08/1-gigabyte-is-not-equal-to-1024_22.html

1000^5 is every bit as normal as (10^3)^5 or 10^15. BTW, a pebibyte is 2^50... http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html

What's it really like on Main St, USA now?

I suppose you're now going to tell us that the iPhone, iPod, iMac, iLife and iWhatever are business products?

S&P will be under 700 within days

Yeah, that was a spectacular screw-up. But, no actual foreigners were used or harmed in this entirely American event: http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/launches/orbiter_errorupd_093099.htm

S&P will be under 700 within days

Actually, it's petabyte. To get really anal, peta- is a decimal prefix, so it means 1000^5 bytes and not 1024^5 which is a pebibyte.

All are Base 2, binary, abbreviations. Hard disk manufacturers don't use Base 2 abbreviations. If you read the fine print on the box it states that the drive has 20 million bytes of storage, not 20,971,520 (20*1024*1024).

It's because banks use roman numeral designations. English measure uses K for 1,000 and M for 1,000,000.

What's it really like on Main St, USA now?

I live in Morris County, NJ and agree for the most part. RE prices are coming down at different rates depending on where you are. The shore communities, especially further south have been hammered. Have a friend who's an agent and there's very little action. Worse are the rental vacancies...

One Of The Main Blocks To US Energy Policy Is Gone

Not just cap & trade: "Obama has promised to spend $15 billion a year to help private industry develop clean energy technology and to institute a cap-and-trade system to reduce emissions 80 percent by 2050." I'm not a fan of Obama, or any tax & spend democrat for that matter. But, I'm...

Agreed. Nuclear, solar, wind. Wave even. It's about time. Will be interesting to see where OPEC takes the price of crude once the policy is released and funded.

On the fundamentalism of PA traders

I agree with optioncoach on this one. A .300 average and 30 HR a year is a first class ticket to the Hall of Fame. You don't mess with something like that, you don't even try to tweak it, not even if looking at his swing makes you want to blow chunks.
