Increase in IV would have to be due to an unexpected event, such as biotech company submitting a drug to the FDA. Or AAPL calling a VERY IMPORTING NEWS CONFERENCE in two weeks time, something like that would send IV through the roof. But you would have to be in the trade before these unexpected...

SPX option trading hours: 8:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. Central Time (Chicago time), that's 4:15pm (16:15) EST.

There is only one situation that I can think of that will trade as the OP would like, and it would be a rare trade. Since the OP didn't give a ticker this trade would best be explained with a XYZ example and estimated option prices. I prefer real examples, but this will do for a quick demo...

The only trade I can think of is: Buy Deep OTM options for pennies or nickels. Sell 1 strike OTM options for dollars.

One way to play FaceBook before (and after) they release the shares to the public is through SOCL the social ETF. The blue dot was when Facebook announced the IPO on Feb 2, 2012. My guess is that it would be a good time to buy SOCL, I think FaceBook is the next Google...

Depends on the info you provide. $200.00 maximum risk? That changes things a lot on a $600.00 tech stock just before earnings, your options have been severely limited. Your looking at spreads only 1 strike apart or long DOTM. Best to stay clear of PCLN with your meager budget, take it...

Based on the above information I recommend you stay away from a PCLN earnings trade, it's too hot for you. Just sit on the sidelines and perhaps try a trade for next earnings when you have more confidence. :)
