Good news: BSE not a problem.

180 - I can't make sense out of what you are saying so I guess prefacing it with nonsense makes sense.

Good news: BSE not a problem.

If the feed ban is not working and the practice or violations of the ban are so widespread and prevalent then why don't we have an epidemic. This is not a new problem but an old one being put to rest. The feeding of byproducts in the mineral form has been done for many years. 70 or more years...

Good news: BSE not a problem.

maxpi - You have it exactly(as usual). You probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than contracting BSE. Certainly Sars and especially the flu are far more dangerous in terms of probabilities for contracting the diseases. I recently read that they have a maybe treatment for it in...

Good news: BSE not a problem.

I'm not sure of the exact temperatures although I recently read the cited figures for the UK. The whole purpose of the heating process is to turn the rendered products into their mineral states and kill any dangerous ingredients. 1500 degrees seems awfully high to me but that is what the article...

Good news: BSE not a problem.

The US banned the feeding of products from rendered animals to livestock in 1997. I am not sure what the temperature is for rendered product in the US is but some time ago in the UK it was 1500 degrees. Several years ago they lowered the temperature to 1000 and some there blame the outbreaks...

Good news: BSE not a problem.

If you live in the PNW or along any of the North/South arterial routes from Canada and have for the past several years seen the literally thousands of cattle and hog trucks heading into the US then it isn't hard at all to imagine. The producers in the US have argued for years that this import...

Good news: BSE not a problem.

The word out in the field for several days is that the cow was imported from Alberta Canada about 2 1/2 years ago. Which means, with the incubation period, she was also probably infected there. She may have come from not too far from where the Canadian cow was found about 11 months ago. There...

    Interesting stock picking approach

Power Options has as a definable criteria for their searches the ability to define a range of broker recommendations to filter stocks for possible options strategies. Even their default searches use the recommendations ranges. You have to decide whether to use it contrarian or not. To me...

Here is a list of accomplishments we have in Iraq

Another accomplishment in Iraq is that Abu Nidal is dead. That alone should make some people safer.

    Mav's Verticals

Thanks for the heads up about Greentree margins. I have been looking at them for a new account I need to set up soon. I like to keep my potential margins low so my bread and butter verticals can be spread out over several positions. With the length of time that the margin is tied up in the back...

    Mav's Verticals

Thanks Mav. I guess the secret comes from my handle I can smell a sick stock from a mile away and doubt the good ones. I am spending a lot of time looking at open interest in putting these on, almost more than technical analysis. Sentiment is potential supply and demand and that with support and...

    Mav's Verticals

This a great thread. I have been doing these and using a portfolio somewhat like Mav suggests. It is a constant profit producer or has been for some time. I am slowly moving away from the put verticals and using even more call verticals to spread the risk. I don't know why except maybe I can't...

    Covered Call writing

Why not do collars with leap puts on stocks that pay fairly good dividends. Just figure the cost of the put as an addition to the stock purchase price and see if the dividends plus the sold calls each month give a decent return on the stock plus the put. Only do front month calls.

    Covered Call writing

Thanks Mav, your posts are always really appreciated. That brings up one more question. At expiration who is holding what in the positions where there are thousands of positions in the OI.

    Covered Call writing

A question I have had about covered calls is. When a trader or whoever buys a call, does the MM offset his side of the transaction by buying the underlying stock. If so he would be creating a hedge by also creating a covered call from his side. I guess my question really is how often do MMs...
